Overspending will get in trouble
More and more families need to stop overspending. If you have so many bills you don't have much left over you have overspent. Too many people are living paycheck to paycheck. Some have to work two jobs to make ends meet. What good is it to have all this stuff if you have no time to enjoy it. Having more credit cards is not the answer. Too many families end up in divorce and bankruptcy for getting into financial trouble.
Cut up all but one credit card
Keep the credit card with the lowest interest rate. Stop using the others and cut them up. Make a plan not use the credit card unless you absolutely have too. If your living with little or no savings this is difficult when emergencies come up. The person in the house who has the most spending control should have the credit card and no one else. Make sure you agree on any purchases made over a set amount you agree on. This works for cash and credit.
Keep track of every dollar you spend
Use Quicken or Microsoft Money to list every dollar you spend. At the end of the month you will be surprised of what you spent your money on. If you can cut out that extra bagel and coffee a few times a week you would be surprised how much money you can save. If there is something you can do without cut it. You must take a hard look at your expenditures if you are to make any real strides in saving.
Start a savings
Start a savings even if its only a few dollars a week. If your money is tight you need to see what you can cut. There is a number of things you can save money on and start a savings with that money. For example do you need all those premium channels for your TV? How about all those cell phone options? Keep monthly expenditures you have to have and cut the rest. Cutting the Sunday paper will save you $4 to 5 dollars per month.
Refinance your mortgage if possible
Paying too much per month for your mortgage? See if you can refinance and pay off your bills with extra cash. Your home is the biggest and best investment you will have. However, you should not be paying more than 40% of your monthly income to pay your mortgage. You be eligible for a lower rate or a different mortgage entirely. Make sure you shop around and don't take the first offer thrown your way. I am not mortgage expert but you may be able to save money by refinancing. Just do not use the the savings each month to run up more debt. Once you create breathing room start saving and keep cutting your costs.
Mad money for each spouse
What helps to cut expenditures and save money is to give each spouse mad money which is theirs to save, spend, or use it for whatever. You set and amount like $50 dollars a week or whatever it works out too. This money is theirs to do whatever they want with it. When is comes to marriage there isn't any his and her money except for this amount you set aside as such. Even if its just $10 or 20 dollars a week. At least its something that each person can spend on themselves.
There is so much more we can say about finances but this will get you started in the right direction.
