1. If you are one of those people who like to leave their doors open, a key in the front door or under the doormat, 9 times out of 10, you a given an open invitation for someone to break into your home, while making it as easy as possible in the process. Many experienced burglars know that many people hide their key in the front door, and this will usually be the first place that they look for it. Therefore, it is never a good idea to hide your key within easy reach of your front door. If you must hide your door key at all, try to hide it a good distance away from the front door in a position that no one but you would think to look.
2. Another common point of entry for a burglar to gain access to your house is through a window. If you are prone to leaving your windows unlocked, you must begin to make it a habit of locking them whenever you get ready to go to bed at night, or are leaving the house. This will make a very hard for them to gain entry and may also be a deterrent that makes them look at the other house across the street, instead of yours. If you must leave your window open, at the very least, make sure that you have safety locks installed. Make sure you remember to lock all of your windows and doors whenever you have to leave your home.
3. If you have trees and shrubs in your yard, make sure that you keep them trimmed, because if they are not trimmed, they could potentially be the perfect hiding place for a burglar. It is always beneficial for you to walk around your yard and ask yourself; if I were a burglar, how would I get into my house? This is a good way for you to identify any possible safety threats that may need to be addressed. If you notice any possible hiding places close to your home, do whatever is necessary to eliminate that danger. Prevention is always the best cure.
4. Most of the time when a house is burglarized, it happens at night. This is mainly due to the fact that thieves like to work when it is dark. Therefore, it is always a good idea to have your yard, brightly lit at night. This can be easily accomplished with the simple addition of a two spotlights and motion detectors. Remember bright lights are an intruder's worst enemy.
5. If your home has a lot of nice possessions, such as expensive cars, it is a good idea to keep them in the garage. Try to do as little as a possible to attract attention to any pricey possessions that you may have. Burglars would much rather target a home that they know already has a lot of things that all very valuable, so don't be your own worst enemy. Whenever possible keep windows covered. This will make it harder for a potential burglar to see on the inside of your home. As an added measure of protection, use shades at night to keep others from looking inside your home.
