Avoid Cramming
Cramming is the practice or habit of studying large amounts of material in a very limited amount of time. It has been found out that cramming is not a very good study habit. When this is the study habit of choice, one usually feel overwhelmed with the amount of material to cover and it seriously decreases concentration. So, study way ahead by taking little chunks out of your lessons weeks ahead so that when the time for an exam comes all you do is review. Confidence, the feeling that you can do it because you have prepared for it a while back, increases concentration.
Avoid Noise
Noise reduces most people's ability to concentrate. If you are one of them, the best thing to do is to choose a time and a place where there is the least noise. Early in the morning, when everybody is still asleep, would be a good place to start. If you don't have your own room or if you are sharing yours with someone, you can go to your school library for peace and quiet. However, going to a school library is not enough. There are so many distractions there too. Even though they may be the silent, visual type they are still distractions nevertheless. So, when you go to a library find a table that faces a wall so that you will not be distracted by all the other people present there.
Avoid Distractions
Many students bring lots of unnecessary things to the table when they study that they find it hard to focus. Here are some things that you should avoid bringing to your study: cell phone, portable music players, food, unrelated material, and others. Put on the table only the things you will actually need or use for your study. Another way to reduce or do away with distractions is to turn off the television and the internet while you are studying. Studying while watching TV divides your attention and you cannot concentrate and benefit from either. For those who study with a computer, temporarily disable the internet connection so that you will not be tempted to waste precious time surfing, emailing, etc.
Some people like to study with some music on, while others do not. If music helps you concentrate, use a player that you don't have to keep on adjusting or changing because doing that will be a distraction.
Avoid Stray Thoughts
Sometimes you are trying to read but it seems that your mind is off somewhere. When this happens you find it hard to understand what you are reading even though you have been rereading it several times already. One of the ways to stop these involuntary thought flows from distracting you is to read your study material aloud. You can also underline or highlight important statements you find in the material you are studying. These will help you focus more on the work at hand.
Another thing you should avoid doing is to study with an empty stomach. When we study we use up lots of energy and burn up lots of calories and if we started with an empty stomach the longer we study the hungrier we become. Hunger keeps us from concentrating because our mind will be focusing on food and our hunger pangs. So, try to eat something before you begin your study, but don't eat too much or you will feel drowsy and become sluggish.
Avoid Shadows
The best place to study is where there is enough light. Natural light is preferable when and if possible. For those who can only study at night a bright lamp will do as long as it is not directly behind you casting your own shadow on the book or material you are trying to read. When the place you are studying is dark your eyes get tired easily and concentration is hindered.
Avoid Overdoing
Time your study and get some break every once in a while. When we are tired we cannot concentrate. A break every thirty or so minutes may relieve an aching neck or back and will do its job to release stress to enhance concentration.
If you follow these wise recommendations, you can increase the level of your concentration and, in turn, increase your chances of passing the exams.
