Tips on Improving Credit Card History for a Higher Credit Limit

MIKE T
Everybody wants to have a higher credit limit. A higher limit gives you more purchasing power. However, an increase in credit limit really depends on how you manage your credit card and how you keep yourself in good credit standing.

Some credit card companies give an automatic increase in credit limit after a certain period of time of good credit standing. Others review their clients' accounts semi-annually or annually. If the clients' account meets a specified amount of requirements and conditions, an increase in credit limit is given.

Some of us though would like to get an increase at the soonest possible time. In these cases, all we have to do is call our banks and request for an increase. Normally, we will be asked to fill up an application for the increase or, if you have an account online, you just have to press a button.

Unfortunately, the request is not always approved. The whole point of getting that approval is to prove to the bank that you are a good creditor; that they will benefit from lending you money; that you are worth the financial risk they are taking.

Here are some points you may want to remember in achieving a good credit history:

Pay your bills on time. There is nothing sweeter than a client responsible enough to pay his bills on time. Paying your bills on time shows the bank that you can be trusted with the money that they are lending because they are assured that they will be paid - on time. It would be better if you can pay more than the minimum. By doing so, you save on finance charges and ensure the trust of the bank as well as improve your credit image.

Know your credit card limit and don't go over it. There is normally a fee for charging over your credit limit. But more importantly, if you go over your limit, you are pretty much telling your bank that you cannot control your spending. You have no regard for your credit limit and a person who cannot properly manage his finances cannot be trusted to be given more money more so be able to pay his debts properly.

Be wise when using your credit card. If you don't use your credit card, banks will not be able to get the proper information as to how you manage your finances. Apart from this, giving you a higher limit is pointless. Yes, you do not owe them that much. You have no problems paying your bills. But neither are you in need of a higher limit. What use is a higher limit if you don't even use your credit card?

Do not assume. Banks have different guidelines and policies. As mentioned earlier, sometimes you don't even have to request for an increase in credit limit. If you follow the tips above, it is more likely that your request will be granted. Nevertheless, it is still best not to assume that it will be given as this will only bring unnecessary frustration. Besides, granting that you have a good credit standing, you can always get a new card
