Tips for Incorporating a Back to School Theme in Your Homeschool

Mrs. Renee

At the beginning of the school year teacher's spend time focusing on themes for their classrooms. For younger children having a theme for the year can really help them feel motivated to get their work done during the day. Just because you are a homeschooler this does not mean you can not have a fun creative homeschooling theme. To kick off the new homeschool year, a theme can really make it seem more exciting.

Let the kids decide

Start by letting the kids come up with a few creative ideas. No matter how young they are, they can come up with some of their favorite characters that you can then incorporate into your school. You can even have the kids create their own characters. Have them draw them out, and then you can photo copy the characters they have created, and add them to the top of their worksheets, and blow them up and hang them on the wall.

Bulletin boards

If you don't have a bulletin board now may be a good time to get one. You can find an affordable bulletin board at Walmart.com, or at any local school supply store. You can then decorate your bulletin board with your child's favorite cartoon character.

Create a border for your bulletin board

One simple idea is to use the cartoon characters of your child's choice and make them into a boarder for your bulletin board. You can easily make this boarder yourself. For example if your child really enjoys the Cars2 movie characters, you can purchase stickers, and some construction paper. Then cut out strips that are the length, and width of your bulletin board. Cut the construction paper, and then have your child place the stickers on it. You can then place the strips on the bulletin board around the edges. It will really make your homeschool area a more exciting one.

Create your own theme paper

Creating your own theme paper can also be a lot of fun. You can find plenty of creative clip art pictures online that you can print from your printer. Once you print them out, have your child cut them out, and then glue them onto the edges of the worksheets you plan to use. Then just photocopy them and you will have themed paper for your kids to use.

Make it suitable for older kids

If your kids are past the elementary years, then you will want to choose a more mature theme for back to school. Have your child pick out the theme that they would like best. Older kids should have no proclaiming coming up with a theme themselves. You can easily make this a fun summer project that they need to have ready before the start of the new school year.
