1. Start with what you already have. Furniture already available in your home can double as homeschooling furniture. For example the kitchen table and chairs can be used for this purpose. May be you can free up some storage space in a bookshelf and cabinet by reorganizing them for storing the homeschool books, notebooks and other supplies. The same goes for drawers, baskets, cupboards, storage containers etc. For outdoor educational trips you can use your backyard, free area attractions or local parks.
2. It has been observed that at the end of each school year many public schools dispose off some old school furniture like tables, desks and chairs either for free or for a few dollars. Usually you can get useful items that have many years of use still left in them, at these times, at the fraction of their original cost. All you have to do is keep yourself informed by contacting your friends or teachers and requesting them to inform you before such a giveaway or sale takes place. Many of these items can be restored to their former glory with a little repair and finishing work.
3. As with furniture you can also obtain used curriculum such as books, teacher's manuals, student manuals and answer keys and save a lot of money. However you must make sure that the editions are right and appropriate.
4. In regular school, children have to keep up with dress trends as otherwise they will feel left out. The children are usually under pressure to have a rotation of outfits so that they can be spaced apart properly. In the case of home school there is no such pressure on the kids. If you really wish to save money on homeschool wear you can visit your local Salvation Army outlet. You can sometimes get clothes that still have the tags on them. You can get discounts of up to 50% meant for students in many Salvation Army stores by using your child's homeschool student ID card, on certain days.
5. Make good use of your local library for homeshooling resources. The library can be used beneficially by the home educator for obtaining books, for enrichment classes, story time, etc. If properly used your local library can be really useful if you are trying to educate your children on a tight budget and want to keep your homeschooling costs to a minimum.
