Whether you are preparing your home to go onto the market, preparing it for renting, or you just want to make it look a little better with as little money as you can, this article is for you. In this day and age, everyone is trying to make their pennies go a little further, but in homeownership it isn't always that simple.

We all know if we have an unlimited cash flow, how much easier it would be to update and revitalize a home would be. However, in reality we all pretty much have a limited budget for making our homes look better. So, here are some do it yourself ideas and tips for making your home look a little better, without impacting your wallet so much.

One of the least expensive things that is frequently overlooked when people are updating their homes is the light switch and electrical outlet plates. More than likely this is something you never even thought of. You can update those old, painted over plates for merely a few dollars.

In the areas that you entertain mostly in, such as the living room, dining room etc., you might want to spend a little more. Look into more expensive brass plates for these areas. They will bring a sense of class and sophistication to the room for around $6.00 each.

Another great idea for you to do is add molding and trim to your home. If you already have some, update it and bring some punch to your living space. Although, you should paint the rooms that you are putting the new trim in first. This will keep the colors similar. There is nothing more embarrassing than putting up new trim and having your guests notice the dingy colored walls up against the new beautiful trim. When painting your trim you should seriously consider using a white gloss paint.

If you cannot afford to do every room in your home at one time, you can start by first doing the rooms that will be noticed by your guests first, such as the dining room , living room and entry ways.. Try to budget for at least some work getting done every other week or so. This might seem virtually impossible, however it is completely possible, even on a tight budget.

Let's talk about new interior doors. Quite a few people are under the impression doors are expensive. However, for less than a movie and dinner for two you can buy new doors for at least three rooms. You can purchase new white doors for around $20.00 each. They are completely ready for you to hang them up. However, you can spend about $10 more and buy a little fancier doors. These are six panel doors that can add quite a tasteful look to the room.

Updating the hardware on your doors can also be a great and inexpensive way for you to add style to your home. Instead of continuing to use those old, dirty and even paint dripped doorknobs you can purchase new brass ones for around $15.00. Or if you have a little extra money in your budget you can spend around $22.00 and purchase the more extravagant "S" shaped handles for your doors. If you like the idea of using these handles and can not afford to put them on every door right now, start of by putting them on the bathroom doors and work your way to every door.

Your home should make others feel welcomed and invited. One way you can do this at a reasonable price is to put a new front door up. If you think about it, you really only get one chance to make a first impression. Doesn't it make more sense to have that first impression a good one that is remembered than a not so nice one that is remembered?

A sturdy thick front door is a great way to make your home look wonderful. Using and old front door gives your home the look of old and decrepit. For under $150 you can buy a brand new heavy front door for your home. You can use a high gloss paint to give your new front door a bright and welcoming color for all to see.

As you can see, these are all fairly inexpensive ways to improve the overall appearance of your home. Many of these ideas are frequently overlooked by homeowners. Be sure you make your home as beautiful and welcoming as it can possibly be. Sometimes, it's the little things that matter the most and leave the biggest impact.
