Tips for Inexpensively Redecorating Your Bathroom

A. Giovanni
Let's face it, even if your budget is a little tight right now, you'd still like to spruce up your bathroom. Making some fresh changes in one of the most relaxing rooms in your house can really lift your spirits. You can easily redecorate, with a these creative tips that are relatively inexpensive to try.

Fundamentally, redecorating your bathroom involves changing the color scheme. Start by changing the color of your decorative towels. Change your rugs and coordinate them to match your new towels.

Choose a new exciting color to paint the walls. Fresh paint is an inexpensive way to refresh a bathroom. Consider a decorative finish for your walls. If you don't want to breathe a lot of bad fumes look for VOC-free paint. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. This is another way to "go green." VOC-free paint is better for both you and the environment.

Paint and hardware stores usually offer books and classes on different kinds of finishes for your walls. Some of them require only simple tools such as a sponge or a rag to apply a two-tone effect. If you are a clever artist, you can add a marbleized effect or even create a mural that will really make guests say, "Wow!"

Add a wallpaper border or experiment with stencils. The border can go at the top or about 1/3 of the way up from the floor. Don't forget to freshen up the trim with paint, too.

When you are painting and redecorating, remember to take into consideration the size of your room. A very bright color in a small room can be overwhelming. For more ease of change in the future, paint a neutral color and consider changing out other colorful accessories so that you can change your accent colors on a whim. Semi-gloss paints also clean up better than matte.

Use wallpaper in bathrooms advisedly, especially those with showers in homes occupied by people who like to turn up the steam. Wallpaper sometimes does not have a long life in such bathrooms and may be better reserved for other rooms of the house.

Apart from the obvious things that you can think of on your own, here are a few other ideas you might not have thought of:

Replace the following:

Towel holders

Soap dishes

Toothbrush holder

Waste basket

Shower curtains

Shower curtain holders

Door knobs or handles on your cabinets

Here are some other small touches:

Add seasonal touches such as themed hand towels and knick-knacks.

Add a decorative candle

Change the sconces on the light fixtures

Add a new picture or a small mirror

Get a decorative tissue holder

Add a little table.

Put a lamp on the table.

Add a planter with a living plant or a dried bouquet

Add tassels to knobs of your cabinets or to decorative outer shower curtains

Add a fancy decorative hook for bathrobes

Add doilies

Add a tiffany bowl with a little potpourri

Add a shower curtain, if even if you have a tub without a shower; it can add drama to the room

Add an electric home fragrance with a decorative sconce such as those offered by Yankee Candle.

Redecorating your bathroom can really revitalize your home and lift your spirits. And, it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Take your time and make an enjoyable experience out of it. If you can, involve the entire household and make it a fun family project. Get your spouse involved and spend some time looking for just the right bargain items at your local antique shops and flea markets.

You mentioned the details that can make or break an updated look. I've been surprised by bathroom redos where the owners spent a ton on countertops and new mirrors and bathroom cabinets but left the orignal (and very dated) towel racks, etc. It really didn't look right (and I don't mean vintage or antigue towel bars).
