Assess Problem with Old Faucet
Faucets develop problems for different reasons. Some fail as a result of hard water and some from simple wear and tear over time. It is important to consider the reason for leakage or other problems before choosing a replacement. If hard water is an issue, then an in-line filter may also be a consideration.
Use Teflon Pipe Thread Tape
Teflon can be used around the threads on each journal in place of a liquid or paste sealant to help avoid any possible contamination.
Application of Teflon Pipe Thread Tape
Have the trailing edge lay in the direction of the thread. (Right hand lay of the tape for right hand thread.) This will help assure that the tape will apply evenly and work properly.
Sealing the Threads
Be certain to seal each journal when installing your replacement kitchen faucet. This is an important step in preventing leakage.
Securing Water Lines
Another step worth mentioning is the fastening of the hot and cold water supply lines to your new fixture. A little torque goes a long way when tightening seated connections. In many applications, you will find that using the older seats will work fine without replacement. However, you will want to inspect these seats for mineral grit and other imperfections prior to reinstalling. If seats on supply line fittings are questionable, replace without any further consideration.
Care in Installing Supply Line for Sprayer Nozzle
When installing faucets with a sprayer feature, it is important to keep the supply line beneath the kitchen cabinet from twisting. It is recommended that this be installed prior to connecting sprayer nozzle head to tubing. The tubing should rest in an easy 'u' form which makes it easy to raise and lower the nozzle from the rest position.
Replacing Pipe
All plumbing jobs present opportunities to upgrade water supply systems. This is no different when replacing your kitchen faucet. It may be a good time to replace old steel or lead supply lines to your sink and possibly even new supply line shut off valves.
Clean Sink Under Base of Faucet
Once the old faucet is removed, a good cleaning of the sink base is recommended. This aids in ensuring a good seal between the new faucet and the surface of the sink.
Consider Braided Water Supply Lines
Nylon or stainless steel braided water supply lines can replace rigid supply line applications. This helps to keep water lines flexible under all temperatures.
When Turning Water Back On
A good amount of air generally accumulates in water lines after shutting off the supply line during the removal of the old faucet. It is a good idea to leave new faucet valves open (both hot and cold if independent and center open for single-lever models) when turning main water supply back on to assist in bleeding water lines of accumulated air and also provides little resistance for possible leakage until you can make yourself present for a detailed inspection.
