Tips for Job Hunting in a Bad Economy

Kathy Burns-Millyard
New and soon-to-be college graduates have probably realized that their timing is extremely bad right now. They are trying to look for a job in today's economic climate, and prospects are questionable at best. Many companies have gone under because our economy is currently so bad, and those which are still in business are cutting their work forces, and reducing hours of employees they are keeping. This makes the job hunting process for any new college graduates much worse than normal.

If you are a new college graduate you might become discouraged by how bad our economy currently is. Try not to be though, because even if many companies are laying people off or have a hiring freeze, there are actually still many who are looking to hire the right people. Your best chances for finding a job is of course to be at the top of your college class. This puts you in the best position to get hired for the rare few jobs which are available. If you haven't done overly well a little college of course, you're going to find a job hunting process that much more difficult. In either case, here are some job hunting tips which might help.

1. Get your name and information out there to as many places as you can. Don't restrict yourself to sending your resume to only the companies you are interested in. While the economy is bad, your goal is to keep your résumé distributed as far and wide as you can. Don't worry about whether the company is hiring or not right now. Just get your resume into their hands, so that it can go into their active file in the human resources department. That way when they do start hiring again, your information will be right on hand.

2. Get your resume online as well. Getting your resume out as far and wide as you can is critical to your job hunting success, so be sure you have your resume listed with every online job related website you can find. This helps you get your name and credentials distributed even farther while saving you the added expense of travel and transportation.

3. Don't decline part-time job offers. Just because you're fresh out of college, and even if you were at the top of your class, that does not mean you can't be picky about what job you take. When the economy is bad, almost any job is better than no job. So be sure to snatch up any opportunity that becomes available, whether it is part-time or not. This will provide you with at least some income to start with, and you can continue distributing your resume and looking for a better job over time.
