Tips for Jumping Rope

Jumping Rope for Beginners

Lyn Vaccaro

Jumping rope requires a specific technique if you're going to create an effective work-out using this mode of exercise. Tips for jumping rope are numerous and good to use because the wrong technique can leave you sore and limping if you are incorrectly rope jumping for a good aerobic workout. In fact, not only is it a good aerobic workout, it's such a near perfect total body conditioner and toner because of the complete engagement of the entire body.

Rope Types

One of the best aspects for jumping rope is the fact that it's so convenient and inexpensive. It's just you, your rope, a decent pair of shoes and the ground. It does help to have knowledge of some of the different jump ropes available so you can make an informed decision regarding which jump rope to buy.

Speed Ropes

A lot of expert rope jumpers find that just a simple inexpensive plastic rope made for speed is the best way for them to get a great rope jumping work out.

Ergonomic Ropes

This rope is designed with upscale wider handles to help you work out more comfortably. The idea is that holding the wider handles, with designs to outline and support your hand grip is a more comfortable way to increase your rope jumping time for a longer work out.

Weighted Ropes

This type of rope has weights that are placed in the two handles. In this way you'll be able to have a more intense work out for your upper body and arms. I've used this type of rope and can attest to the effectiveness of the increased heart rate and sweat that you can achieve while you jump with them.

High Tech Ropes

The swivels in these technically advanced handles are great for eliminating the tangling that can often occur while your engaged in a good jump. Something about the ease with which the rope circulates around your body really helps to make this rope a pleasant one to use. At least that's what I thought when I used that type.

Jumping Technique

Your goal is to alternate from one foot to the other while staying on the balls of your feet. This is what makes jumping rope a kinder and gentler form of high impact aerobic exercise. I find that it has much less impact on my hips and knees that does running, however, some people find that hard to believe. Once you try it you'll see that it is indeed true.

It's important to keep your entire body, shoulders, core and legs in sync working together as your jumping to help yourself in coordinating a rhythm and pace that works well for you individually. You'll find that once you find your own pace, you'll get the "swing" it and be struck with the ease that you can actually do this exercise.
