When toddlers play they forget all about organization and neatness, toys get thrown across the room, their short attention spans make them go through 1 toy every few minutes. It will be sometime before your toddler can clean up his room, and put all his toys away and it gets frustrating having to do the dirty work of cleaning the toddler's room a few times a day. I have included some suggestions below on how to limit the disaster of the rooms.
Place only a few toys out on the floor - it is best to limit the amount of toys that you let your toddler play with, make sure to keep other toys out of sight and out of reach to prevent your toddler from pulling them down and throwing them every place. Giving your child a few toys to play with at a time, gets your toddler used to the concept of neatness, and when it is time to put the toys away, your toddler might be able to do it because of the small amount of toys
Place toys in bins such as the Rubbermaid plastic storage bins and not around the floor- I got into the habit of placing a lot of my daughter's toys around the room, her baby dolls, stuffed animals, and books, and the room never stayed cleaned, the way I organized her room made it so easy for her to tear it down.
Purchase some plastic Rubbermaid bins and put toys in there, plastic Rubbermaid bins with the sealing lid are very spacious and better than toy chests, and hampers because they have a top that closes tightly and goes over the bin, making it hard for the toddler to access the toys and preventing them from throwing toys all over the room. Once you have put the toys in the bin, place the bin inside of a closet, out of sight.
Place a few books on a toddler book shelf or inside of a Rubbermaid plastic storage bin, if you decide to put books inside of the bin, then only take 3 -4 books out for your child to read.
Get rid of toys that are not touched- there are probably many toys stuffed in closets, and behind the bed, toys that are relatively new, if the toy is not played with clear some pace by getting rid of them.
Limit small and stuffed toys-tiny toys just drive me crazy, they are the toys that multiply without notice, and they are very hard to put in a designated place in a room, so skip the toy machines and pass on those tiny toys to avoid the clutter. Stuffed animals big and small take up a lot of space and create stressful clutter, the thing about stuffed animals is, they are rarely played with but too cute to throw out, if you can not bear throwing those stuffed animals out put them on a shelf or place them inside of a bin, out of your child's sight.
Don't allow food and beverage in the room, doing so will cause hard to clean up spills and unwanted guests.
Designated specific areas and containers for things- keep the room neat by putting clothes and drawers or hanging them up, purchase a bin organizer or storage shelf for small toys, art supplies, coloring books, puzzles etc, Purchase a closet cubby by Prince lionheart to keep shoes, clothes, or a few toys in etc. Prince lionheart cubbies come in many colors and they prevent the closet from becoming cluttered because the wide cubbies hold items well and save a lot of space.
Teach your toddler to clean up after he is done playing, sang the clean up song while cleaning, it might be hard to teach a toddler to clean his room but a little persistence and aid and the toddler will get used to it. When your child has reached 27 months (or close to three) you can emphasize keeping a clean room, and you can teach the child that if the room is not kept clean the toys will go away, until he is ready to clean up after himself..
