Tips for Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Jasmine
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. The primary result is damage to joints. The swelling and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis cause patients difficulty in daily living. Loss of mobility further complicates matters. Methods do exist that can help sufferers manage better.

Communication

Communicating with loved ones is an essential element in making life easier for RA sufferers. Many patients fear becoming a burden on family members and friends, so they avoid asking for help. Most families are looking for ways they can be of assistance and never consider a request for help burdensome.

Let those close to you know specifically what tasks you need assistance with. For example, a common struggle for RA patients is carrying a laundry basket. Rather than struggle in pain with the task, share this problem with a family member who can help.

RA pain can vary in severity day to day. Patients need to let family know when they are having an especially bad pain day.

Changes around the House

Rearranging certain things in the home can simplify life for an RA patient. For example, avoid keeping frequently used kitchen items in hard to reach places, such as high shelves in cupboards.

Be sure that all stairways have strong railings, also making sure they are smooth. Many RA patients rely heavily on railings when going up and down stairs. Rough railings may result in splinters in the hands.

Exercise

Exercising helps slow the progression of the disease and fight fatigue. The Arthritis Foundation recommends choosing moderate activities that help with flexibility and building muscle strength. A physical therapist or fitness trainer would have advice as to what kind of exercises would be of most benefit. Never start a new exercise plan without consulting your doctor.

Diet

Arthritis Today recommends that RA patients eat a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids. Fish and nuts are rich in these essential fats. They also suggest using olive oil when cooking. These anti-inflammatory foods help reduce pain and swelling.
