Beware of crash diets.
Because of all the advertising about low-calorie foods, meal plans, and quick fixes based around food, you might think that trimming down means cutting out a lot of what you eat. In some instances cutting down on some things, such as sugars and bad fats, are a good thing. But that doesn't mean starving yourself. Your body requires a certain amount of fuel each day to function at maximum efficiency; if you're not giving it that amount than you are being counter-productive. You need to speed up your metabolism, not slow it down by not eating. Also, when you go on a diet, you usually don't plan on staying on it for the rest of you life. If you revert back to old eating habits, why would you be surprised if you gained the weight right back?
Eat properly.
So starving yourself isn't a good idea, but neither is having fast food 3 times a week. You still need to watch what you take in, and if you need to cut back on portion sizes, do it. Counting calories can be a very good way of maintaining a healthy diet. Go with the recommended amount, eat a wide variety of foods to make sure your body is given all the nutrients it needs, and stick to the plan. Cheating every once in a while isn't going to kill you, but too much will make the whole thing useless.
Create leaner muscles.
This is the part where I tell you to exercise. It's incredibly important all around, but in terms of weight loss it can be one key to success. Muscles burn calories all day long, even when they're not in use. Therefore, gaining muscle mass decreases fat mass, and that is the look you are going for. Find a plan that is right for you, work up gradually, and stick with it. You'll feel better and you'll start to shed the unwanted pudge left over from the holidays.
You can lose weight, and you should strive overall to do it healthily. Creating lifelong healthy habits is the only way to successfully keep the weight off after you lose it.
