Tips on How to Lower Your Car Insurance Costs

I currently have car insurance from Geico. Before that I had it with Progressive. And before that I had Geico. So you see I went from Geico to Progressive then back to Geico. Why did I do that?

Well, I was all about saving money. Unless I do not have it as an option, I always shop around. Shopping around is just one of the many ways you can save money on car insurance. Here are some tips on how to lower your car insurance costs, which may be higher than they should really be.

Keep your credit in good shape

A number of car insurance companies use your credit history to determine certain things about your car insurance premiums. So you want to make sure that you have a good credit score. Or else your premiums will be higher.

Avoid lapses in coverage

Yes, lapses in your car insurance coverage can lead to higher premiums. So unless it is inevitable, you should always try to pay your premium on time so it doesn't get cancelled or whatnot. If you are switching providers, make sure that the new coverage will take effect while the old one is still valid.

Avoid unnecessary premium components/coverage

If you have an old car whose value is not so significant, then it makes no sense to have full coverage on it. So make sure you are paying only for what is necessary. For example, if you are a AAA member you may not need to get roadside assistance coverage from your car insurance company. Just make sure you know what you are selecting for your premium.

Ask for discounts

Car insurance companies have different type of discounts. Maybe you qualify for one of them. The only way to find out is by asking them about their discounts. So always ask about discounts. You can reduce your premiums by significant amounts by using discounts.

Shop around

Just because you checked with Geico and they quoted for X dollars does not mean that is the best deal you can or will get for your car insurance premiums. Always consider other providers. In fact, you should commit to a given quote only after you have been given so many other quotes from different car insurance providers. At that point, you have various quotes you can compare to find out which one will be best for you. Of course, you have to take into account the different options offered by each package. That is exactly what I did by going from Geico to Progressive then back to Geico; I shopped around!

If you do not have to pay higher premiums, why are you paying them? Start applying the tips given above and start saving on your car insurance today.
