If you want to keep your chainsaw operating smoothly, you'll need to maintain it properly. There are a few things all owners need to know about caring for their chainsaw. This article will give you a few tips on how to maintain a chainsaw.

Lubrication

One of the most important aspects of chainsaw maintenance is keeping the chain lubricated. The tool won't cut efficiently if it isn't lubricated properly. Some chainsaws have automatic lubrication systems so you don't have to manually do it. Don't use motor oil though. You will need to buy bar and and chain oil for this tasks.

Tension

Maintaining proper tension is another important thing to learn when learning how to maintain a chainsaw. It's important that you check the tension of the chain very often and never allow it to sag. This can be very hazardous because it increases the risk of the chain snapping while using the tool. Again, some designs have automatic chain tensioning systems for your convenience.

Sharpness

Your chainsaw should cut through wood without requiring much downward pressure. If you need to apply a lot of pressure to cut, it's time to sharpen the chain. You will need to perform this piece of chainsaw maintenance to prevent damage to the bar, sprocket, clutch, or chain itself. Also, it's best to store your chainsaw with a scabbard.

Fuel Filter

Checking the fuel filter occasionally is another important aspect of learning how to maintain a chainsaw. Small debris will accumulate over time and possibly clog up the fuel filter. This will decrease the performance of your tool. You should occasionally clean all of this debris out to prevent this from happening. The fuel filter will need to be replaced totally every two years or so.

Spark plug

In order to maintain chainsaws properly, you will need to clean the spark plugs occasionally. If you don't, it will reduce the efficiency of the engine. You can tell when the spark plug needs cleaning when it has black residue on it.

These are a few tips on how to maintain a chainsaw. Make sure you clean small debris out of the fuel filter to keep it from getting clogged. Also, you will need to keep the chain as sharp as possible so you can cut wood with ease.
