Tips for Maintaining Beautiful Skin Throughout the Winter Months

Stacy J. Day
Cold weather has the tendency to be brutal on skin as it can dry it out, leaving it dehydrated, flaky and itchy. Dermatological conditions like eczema and psoriasis are only intensified by dry skin, making keeping the skin properly moisturized crucial. Luckily there are some very useful tips that can help to eliminate or at least minimize extremely dry, scaly and itchy skin, making the winter months a lot more tolerable.

Winter skin tip # 1 - switch to Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Lotion. Sure it's pricey, but it's very well worth it. I suffer from severely dry skin in the summer, and winter is twice as bad. Luckily my dermatologist advised me to use this therapeutic lotion, and I must admit that it is very well worth the cost. Never before have I actually had smooth, moisturized skin throughout the day. Life before Eucerin was a pain. I'd have to reapply lotion every 1 -2 hours, even in the summer months in order for my skin to stay moisturized. I will continue to purchase Eucerin because it literally worked a miracle on my skin.

Winter skin tip # 2 - baby your face - Sure, your body needs to be moisturized more thoroughly in the winter months, but so does your face. A high quality moisturizer made specifically for the face should work adequately.

Winter skin tip # 3 - use a humidifier - since cold weather causes your skin to quickly lose moisture due to dry conditions, using a humidifier which will help to incorporate moisture back into the skin will work wonders. It's also great for the nasal passages as well.

Winter skin tip # 4 - use chap stick - many people tend to neglect their lips when it comes to moisturizing, but your lips contain skin too, skin that is easily affected by harsh winter weather. You don't have to spend big bucks on chap stick, as most brands will serve its purpose-keeping your lips hydrated.

Winter skin tip # 5 - stay well hydrated- as you probably already know, drinking ample amounts of water is imperative for good health, but it's even more important to drink water during the winter months. If the inside of your body is not properly hydrated, you certainly can't expect for your skin to be hydrated, so drink, drink, drink. Everyone has different intake requirements, so you may require more or less than the "8 glasses a day". You should be able to easily determine what amount is best for you.

There is no reason to suffer with dry, itchy, uncomfortable skin all winter long. As long as you follow these helpful tips, you should be able to keep your skin properly moisturized, which will help avoid discomfort. If your skin continues to itch despite following these tips and/or you have a rash, it might warrant a visit to your dermatologist, who can diagnose and treat contributing skin conditions so you can survive the cold weather without any great discomfort.
