Tips on Maintaining a Positive Attitude

Alyssa Russo
Sometimes it is hard to stay positive in life because of the obstacles that are thrown in our way. One thing I learned is that the way we react to those obstacles is what makes us or breaks us. We could either choose to be let down, sad, frustrated or angry or can we can change that for the better and become more positive. When you replace your negativity with a more positive thought process, you start training your mind to handle bad situations, stress and other obstacles much better. This will help you to get your life back on track and your emotions.

I know it seems easier said that done but one way to start is to stop yourself when you start to think negatively. Stop the negativity in its tracks. Clear your mind. Visualize something nice, something that will make you happy. Keep focused on being happy. For example, if you just got bad news that your car needs more repair than you thought it did and it will cost you $300 extra to fix, instead of letting it ruin your day, think more positively. You could think to yourself about how thankful you are to be able to have a car and have the ability to drive. You could say that you are happy that your car is being fixed so that it will run more efficiently. All cars need a tuneup or fixing at some point, so just remember that while it may cost you extra money, it is worth it to have your car running the way it should.

I am not saying that you should be numb to your emotions. If something tragic happened in your life, it is okay to vent and let it out. It is okay to feel the feelings of sadness, grief, frustration or anger. It is not good when those feelings dominate your life and your mind. If you are constantly getting upset over things, then you should try to make a change and start to become more positive. Positive people attract more positive things to themselves. Positive people handle tough situations better than negative people. They can get back on track and move on quicker when bad events happen. If you would like to be a more positive person, you have to allow yourself the opportunity and time to work on yourself.

One good thing I like doing to keep a positive attitude is affirmations throughout the day. I catch myself saying things like "I can do this" or "I know I'll be just fine." Keep affirming positive things daily and you will train your mind to feel those things and possibly attract more positive things into your life.

I know an elderly woman who is just so positive and she never lets anything get her down for too long. She lives independently and is doing great for her age. Her doctor told her that her positive attitude is what keeps her going.

When you really look at something, such as a sunset, the waves of the ocean, a blue sky with white clouds and you can feel the awe of looking at it, that's the feeling you could get when you start becoming a more positive person. You will look at the good things more intently and really feel the good feelings. Tell yourself that you want to keep feeling those good feelings and in order to do that, you have to remain positive.

Some positive things you can do are getting involved in something, such as a hobby or activity. There are many things out there such as taking dance lessons, exercise can help to keep you positive, paint, draw, write in a journal, write short stories or poems, learn to sing, play tennis, be active! Get out there and start doing something for yourself. Do something you know that you might enjoy. Another positive thing is to do volunteer work to help others, which will give you a greater sense of self worth and confidence. Keep yourself busy, get out and talk to people, form friendships, strengthen any relationships you have with the people in your life, look at nature, appreciate the small things in life and most importantly, be good to yourself! Always make time to improve yourself because you an important person who is worth feeling all the good things that life has to offer.
