The first thing you have to do when you are trying to save money on car insurance is to find out what the minimum requirements for car insurance are in your area. To do this, just call the Department of Finance and Administration or the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Next, you have to decide what deductible you can afford to pay if something should happen. Higher deductibles are an easy way to save some money. However, this is the amount you will have to pay toward damages if you are in an accident, so choose your deductible accordingly.
If you have accidents on your record or if you aren't sure what is on your driving record, order a copy of it. Some states charge for these and others will provide one free of charge. You have to look at all the information on the record as far back as seven years. Recent accidents may increase your payments.
Once you have determined the amount of coverage and deductible amounts you want, you have to find an insurance company. One big mistake that people make is that they only check local insurance companies for quotes. Many online insurance companies can provide lower payments while providing the same coverage as brick and mortar insurance companies.
Finally, if you have more than one vehicle, check the quotes for multiple vehicles, even if you plan on driving only one vehicle. In some cases, the payments are cheaper for two vehicles than they are for one, especially if your second vehicle is an older model. It may be worth your while to ask about adding renter's insurance or homeowner's insurance to get a package discount.
Putting all of this information to use can save you a considerable amount of money.
