Tips for Making Delicious Restaurant Style Tacos

Maggie Blake
Tacos are common dinner faire in many homes across the country. A lot of families take the quick route by making tacos with pre-packaged seasonings and pre-made shells. However, for those who really love the tacos they order at real Mexican food restaurants (not talking about Taco Bell here), achieving flavor and texture similar to what is found in Mexican food restaurants is just a few extra steps away. Making delicious tacos requires a couple of less common practices, so if you are trying to make tacos that taste like the ones you get in Mexican food restaurants, try the following suggestions.

Start by avoiding Taco seasoning packets - Taco seasoning packets like the ones commonly found in grocery stores will season your ground beef, but it will taste like the seasoned ground beef at Taco Bell. Delicious taco meat requires more determination and patience than simply opening a packet of seasoning. If you want delicious ground beef for tacos that will taste very much like what you get when you order tacos in Mexican food restaurants around Southern California and the Southwest, try this delicious method for making seasoned ground beef for tacos.

Commit to cooking your own taco shells - It takes time and patience to deep fry corn tortillas into taco shells, but doing so will result in a flavor much like that which you are accustomed to tasting when you order tacos in a Mexican food restaurant.

Make your own salsa - Making your own salsa is quick, and easy. There are thousands of salsa recipes on the Internet, so plug the name of your favorite variety of salsa (verde, fresca, etc.) into a search engine and simply follow one of the recipes that you find in the results.

Choose a Mexican cheese - Some Mexican restaurants use simple cheddar-jack cheese, but many use more authentic cheeses like queso fresco or queso seco, both of which can be purchased in your local Mexican food market.

Don't forget the veggies - Finely shredded lettuce and thinly sliced tomatoes are the perfect topping for tacos when you want them to taste like the ones you get at Mexican food restaurants.

If you want to have Mexican rice with your tacos, try this easy method for making restaurant style Mexican rice.

Delicious tacos like the ones you get in Mexican food restaurants require some effort and patience, but the results are definitely worth the extra time and effort.

Sounds delicious. I'll pass this on to my daughters - they love to cook and do most of the meal prep at our house. Thanks.

We love tacos- and you're right- seasoning the meat (and beans) yourself makes all the difference. My fiance makes tacos basically from "scratch", whereas I'm all about the generics- his food is much better!
