Tips for Making a Last Minute Clown Costume

A. Hermitt
If you are in need of a costume that you need right away, consider a clown costume. It can be made of items that you gather from your closet and things you can find at the thrift store and other nearby stores. Clown costumes are great for Halloween trick or treating, costume parties, and for entertaining children. These instructions will help you make a clown costume.

Choose over sized clothes that are visibly too large for you. Too large slacks can be held up with suspenders. An over sized shirt can be stuffed with pillows for an exaggerated look. You can also choose to be a slim wearing slimming, fitted clothes, but a bigger clown is considered more jolly and may be more fun.

Create a pair of clown shoes from a pair of shoes that are several sized too big. They should flop a little when you walk. Use acrylic paint to brighten the shoe color or to make a flashy design on the shoes. Canvas shoes, and old work-boots will be the easiest to paint.

Make sure your clothes and accessories are very brightly colored. Look for loud, obnoxious pattern, even mus-matching socks and knit gloves. Add bow ties, hair bows (for ladies) and anything else you can find to accessorize your costume.

Add your face makeup. A clown just isn't a clown without face makeup. Applying clown makeup can seem challenging, but it is actually rather simple. You will first want to apply white clown makeup (purchased at your local costume shop) all over the face. Draw and fill in red circles on the cheeks, exaggerate the eyebrows, paint your nose red, and emphasize the your lips with red lipstick. If you have any artistic talent, you can take the face painting project as far as you'd like.

Finish your clown costume with a wig or a hat. Look for a curly red headed wig, or a clown with the the bald center. Alternatively, you can use a striped hat found at festivals, or a fun beanie hat.
