Tips for Making More Money with a Yard Sale

Yard Sale Tips to Increase Your Profits

Here are some tips for making more money with a yard sale. Whether it is a yard sale, garage sale, or other sale the goal is the same: to get rid of stuff and make money. So clean out your closets, attic, and garage and find some stuff to sell.

Advertise

There are many free ways to advertise yard sales on the internet including Craigslist. There are also many yard sale websites that provide free ads as well as many locally based websites. Do a little searching for places to advertise your website, a little time could add a lot of shoppers and help you make more money. Ads in the local paper may be expensive, but might be worth it. Putting up signs at local stores can help boost traffic as well.

Directional Signs

Unless the yard sale is taking place on a well traveled road, directional signs to get buyers from main roads to the yard sale are needed. Check with local laws regarding the placement of signs and always ask permission from private property owners. Don't forget to take down the signs after the sale has ended.

Curb Appeal

If there are large items being sold in the yard sale, place them near the road to attract buyers into stopping. Have a nice sign in the yard and remove clutter (empty boxes, etc.) out of the yard.

Organization

Items for sale at the yard sale should be organized so that buyers can find what they are looking for without having to dig through piles of stuff. This is especially true of the high priced items that will really make a seller some money. Small and expensive items should be displayed near to where the seller will be located to reduce the chances of theft.

Haggle

Sellers should expect buyers to try to haggle prices lower, especially on the higher priced items. If you are willing to negotiate the price then do so, if not don't feel bad saying no. The items are yours and you get to decide at what price you will sell them. If you are unwilling to negotiate, note on the item that the price is firm.

Sell Drinks

There are two reasons to sell drinks at a yard sale: to make money and to get people to stay longer. While selling drinks can make money, getting people to stay at the yard sale a little longer can get them to buy more items especially those expensive items that people tend to think more about before making the purchase.
