Many are overweight because they have an unhealthy lifestyle. Working long hours, eating most meals out, stress or lack of exercise are all negative factors in our effort to maintain a healthy weight. Many are just compulsive eaters, that consume food without thinking, eating in this manner is considered an addiction.

Excessive eating may be harder to treat than other hard core addictions. To control an addiction you must avoid the source, alcoholics for example, cannot consume any alcohol, not even a tiny sip.

A food addiction is impossible to control by total abstinence, people have to eat to maintain life. Food is a non-lethal substance, however, it may by the most difficult to control. However, it is possible to control the type of food, as well as the quality and quantity of food consumed. The companies that market meal-replacements depend on people using their product for successful weight loss. Many succeed because meal-replacements may allow a person to break the habit of compulsive eating.

The special shakes, bars and other products offer the needed nutrients to help suppress hunger. Meal-replacements control calories and may be helpful in breaking the cycle of addictive behavior because you are not really eating.

Most meal-replacement products recommend that you have at least one 'normal' meal per day, those that are trying to lose faster may ignore that suggestion and many people have lost weight using that method.

Using meal-replacement may be okay for the short term, however it does not teach healthy eating habits. You need develop a dieting program that offers a lifetime change in your eating habits or the weight will return very quickly.

Be cautious about using meal replacements, although they are convenient they contain a minimum of calories and nutrition, they cannot substitute for real food over an extended period.

However, if you know or suspect that your problem with food resembles an addiction it may be helpful to use meal-replacements for a short period of time. You should use them as directed, as a one-meal-a-day replacement, and your other meals should be rich in protein, whole grains with plenty of vegetables and fruit. Include some exercise and drink plenty of water and non-calorie beverages.

Using meal-replacement shakes and similar weight loss products can be a safe method of losing weight and using them as an occasional substitution to a healthy diet can help you make your weight loss efforts successful.
