Tips for Members of a Band

Teamwork Lessons from the World of Music and Groups

Here are some tips to help you be a better member of your musical group:

1. It is not about you. The remarkable thing about a band or orchestra is that the whole is so much more than the sum of the parts. There may be some star performers and some journeymen musicians but everyone has to play their part in making the whole band a success. Don't try to grab the limelight.

2. Turn up to rehearsals on time. Don't keep everyone else waiting by breezing in late. Show some respect for your fellow team-members and get there on time and prepared.

3. Rehearse. Practice your key elements in your own time rather than at group rehearsals. Prepare all elements including arranging your music in order.

4. Play in tune and in time. Most of the musicians are there to support the singer or at times another soloist. If you can play in tune and in time it will really help them to perform well.

5. Support each other. Don't criticise but try to be supportive and constructive. Help the junior members of the band and do not hesitate to ask others for help if you need it. Lend a hand with the logistics such as printing music or moving the equipment.

6. When something goes wrong during a performance, keep going. When you play live there will be mistakes but it is vital that you keep playing and adapt to the situation. Don't stop. That would let down your fellow band members. The chances are that the audience did not notice that you missed a verse or played a wrong note.

7. Have fun. It is about making music, companionship and fun so smile and enjoy the experience!

Amazing Paul.... I used to play keyboards and I brag about it whenever teamwork arises, as a most of time not under the reflectors member, but important for the whole performance. Totally agree. Good tips. Cheers
