Tips for Memorizing Bible Verses

Lee Andrew Henderson
An important part of every Christian's life is to witness to another people. In order to be able to witness to others we must be prepared with God's word. It is important to memorize Bible verses in order to be able to use them when witnessing. For some reason memorizing Bible verses is very difficult. Many of us can remember our favorite line from a movie or even an entire song but can't memorize a passage of the Bible. Here are some tips for memorizing Bible verses.

1. Pray
Bible memorization is no different than anything else. Everyone should pray about it before they start. Pray that God will give you the wisdom to remember your Bible verses. After all if God wants us to pray to him about really menial things in our lives then surely he wants us to pray about something major like knowing his Word.

2. Note Cards
This is the best way I've learned to memorize Bible verses. Each morning when I wake up I will write a Bible verse on a note card small enough to either fit in my pocket or my wallet. I will read it a few times before I start my morning and then stick it in my pocket. Throughout the day I will pull the note card out and read it again. It doesn't matter if I'm at work, school, the grocery store, a baseball game or even sitting at a red light. Just pull it out read it again and put it back in your pocket. The best way to memorize Bible verses is simple through repetition.

3. Pictures
A lot of people are very visual. It's easier for us to remember something when we've actually seen a visual of it. When memorizing Bible verses try and picture a visual of it in your head. Seeing a picture or the Bible verse will make it easier to remember. Earlier I said it was easy to remember lines from our favorite movies. Try and think the Bible as a movie and play the events of a passage in your head, then it will be easier to remember the Bible verses in the passage because it will go around with the story.

4. Music
Not only do people do well memorizing something that they've seen but they also memorize things through hearing them. As I said earlier many of us can memorize songs but have a hard to memorizing Bible verses. Well if it's so easy to remember music than simply turn your Bible verses into music. Take the Bible verses you want to learn and turn it into a song. Either make up your own music to the Bible verses or find a song that already exists and sing the Bible verses to the song instead of the actual lyrics. Your song may not turn out to be a musical masterpiece, but that's not really important.

There are also some great iPhone and Android Apps, many that are free, that display Bible verses that you can pick up and read & re-read through out the day.
