Tips for More Restful Sleep

The Importance of Sleep

Terri Bennett
The fact is most of us do not get enough sleep in a 24 hour period that our body requires! Getting enough sleep is not calculated by how many hours you are actually in bed for. It's the quality of the sleep you're getting!

If you're getting up in the morning and are still tired or more tired than when you went to bed you might have a problem! For many people, this can cause many problems throughout the day ahead. You may feel restless, irritable and Ill-tempered!

Does this sound familiar?

If it does, make changes to get your life back. It will make you a much happier person and you will have better relationships with friends, partners and colleagues because you will be much more relaxed and focused!

There are many reasons why people can't sleep very well:

Emotional Distress - anxiety, anger, stress, worry.

Substance Abuse - Drinking too much caffeine, sodas and alcohol

Circadian Disturbance - If you irregulate our body clock, it can seriously affect our sleeping patterns.

Environmental Factors - If our surroundings are too warm or too noisy etc.

Health Problems - Diabetes and heart problems, hypertension and tooth ache etc.

Pre-bedtime Activities - Vigorous exercise just before bed can cause problems with sleep.

Sleep is so important!

Try these tips to help you sleep much better:

Avoid the following substances for at least six hours before bedtime:
Alcohol, Caffeine, Nicotine, Heavy meal.

Try a light snack before bed.

Develop a good bedtime routine.

If you're lying in bed for more than half an hour unable to go to sleep, get out of bed and try doing something monotonous!

Get out of bed and sit quietly for 15 minutes, allowing your body to cool down. When you return back to your bed, as you snuggle back into your cozy, warm bed you will drift into sleep quite easily.

Don't take a daytime nap. It will irregulate your body clock.

Don't watch frightening, worrying or upsetting television programmes before bed.

In fact; sleep is an essential human need that we absolutely can't do without. More and more research is continually being carried out and the studies have shown the importance of sleep.

We cannot survive without it!

If you are seriously having trouble sleeping at night then I would urge you to find the root cause. No one should need to be deprived of sleep.

Sleep deprivation is easily combated once you have established the real problem. It is absolutely vital that we have plenty of sleep to be able to focus and function properly.

Technically, I've been writing on and off since high school; but I didn't get serious until a few months ago. I'd like to be published someday so I am going to continue writing and see what the future holds.  View profile
