How to prepare yourself when relocating to a different country: The very idea of moving across the border can bring on a wide array of emotions. What can start as an exciting idea can turn out to be stressful if you are ill-prepared. Be sure to make a practical checklist, it will be a healthy way of keeping you on track, and will make your cross-country move a lot easier.

1. Get to Know the Other Country: When you are moving across the border, it is important that you do some decent preliminary research for getting to know the country/city/place. Having a little knowledge about the laws and regulations of the new place pertaining to visas, taxes on shipped items of the household, vaccines for the family, taxes and rules regarding moving your car, insurance, and more. Doing this helps in avoiding any last minute surprises. When it comes to issues relating to visas and passports, get in touch with the embassy.

2. File for Passports and Visas: One of the common mistakes people make while moving is procrastinating when it comes to filing applications for visas, passports and permits. This results in chaos during the last few days and may lead to additional stressed-out situations.

3. Prepare a List of Things to Do: Prepare a list of important things to do before planning to make a move. Information such as list of trucking companies and van lines, the value of goods to be shipped, a list of reputable moving companies, bank transfer documents - should all be written down on a piece of paper. Start working on your requirements well in advance so that you have enough time on hand for negotiating and analyzing. Review all of the estimates and forms before signing them.

4. Collect Your Critical Documents and Keep Them Safely: The next thing that you should give attention to is collecting important documents of you and your family. Documents such as birth and marriage certificate, proof of citizenship, insurance and hospitalization records, social security number, academic records and certificates, proof of residency. These should all be collected and kept safely. These documents may be needed on urgent basis in various situations after you move across the border.

5. Get to Know the Insurance Requirements: When moving to a new destination, be prepared for the worst to happen. Collect information on the insurance requirements and availability. Also, have correct information about the procedure to get your property, car, health and pets insured. Make sure you do this near the same time you get a moving estimate.

6. Notify the Authorities: Approximately 4 to 6 weeks prior to the date of the move, notify the post office about your change of address. Inform all utility companies the date of your move so that they can cut down gas, water and electricity supplies. Remember to keep your phone operating till the last day. Be sure to take care of any additional requirements of your children if they are also moving with you.
