Once you've found the perfect apartment, it's time to get moving. Like most first-time apartment renters, you probably don't have much moving to do. The contents of your apartment will probably be the contents of your room from your parents' house. That's O.K. That just means it's time to go shopping. But, I don't mean at a furniture store. As a first time renter, moving costs and a deposit on the apartment will probably have the bank account a bit on the low side. Instead, check out your parents' basement or storage unit. Have older siblings? Check out their "extras" as well. And don't be ashamed! Drop the hint to friends' parents who are sure their children will be living at home forever and have no need for their extra furniture, lamps or dishes.
Now it's time to move all of that stuff into the apartment. Unless your new apartment is cities or states away from your friends and family, don't waste time and money hiring a moving service. Friends and family are always more than happy to help with the moving process, and they charge a lot less than a moving company. You can probably get away with paying your moving gang in pizza and 'thank yous'. Be sure to include all of the women in your life as well. While the men do the heavy lifting and moving, the women are usually more than happy to make sure their loved one moves into a clean and organized new apartment. Again, you may need to supply the cleaning supplies, but it's worth not having to clean the apartment! In addition, you may hit the jackpot with a crafty aunt or neighbor who would be happy to sew slip covers for your out-of-date couches that the puppy used to chew on.
All finished moving? Great. But, before the apartment can feel like home, there's one more important step. It's time to throw a party. Again, this may cost a bit, but throwing a new apartment party right after moving in is sure to yield some great housewarming presents. And, there's no need to offer more than local delivery pizza. Everyone is sure to understand that you don't yet have your bearings in your new apartment kitchen!
Once all is said and done, moving isn't that bad. In fact, moving into your first apartment can be rather fun. Just be careful to return the moving favor to the friends and family who helped you out, because, before you know it, you may be moving into your second apartment, or even your first home!
