Tips for Naming Your Fantasy Football Team
"Bubba's Team". Lame. "Joe Bob's Jets" Please. Personalize Your Team!
When you see one of those teams on the schedule, you can usually relax that weekend. Such owners rarely cover their bye weeks by replacing the players who don't play that week. Some team rosters even contain a player who is suspended, injured or otherwise out of his team's line-up.
I have had a few cases of "writer's block" when it comes to naming a fantasy football team, but it really doesn't take a lot of creativity to come up with a name for your fantasy football team. Just personalize the team name a little according to your job, a favorite hobby, a play on your last name or some other interest you have.
For example, if you are an avid Seinfeld fan there were many catchphrases from the 90's show which would make for an interesting name for your fantasy football team. I won a championship with a team called Vandelay Industries a couple of years ago. One could use the Soup Nazis, for instance. If your name is Jerry, how about Bizarro Jerry? The best team names are something personal to the team owner. One league I was in a few years back had a team called Steamroller Kohler, after the owner's last name
A few years ago, my team was named Mean Machine, as I am a machinist by trade and for the 70's movie The Longest Yard. Then 3-4 years ago, Adam Sandler ruined all that. After Sandler's remaking of the film, that fall there were teams by that name in every league. In the many fantasy football leagues that I have been in, there have been a few clever team names and lots of clinkers such as the ones discussed earlier.
Here are some examples of the good, the bad and the ugly names for fantasy football teams.
Good: The Hanging Chads would be good for someone named Chad or from the state of Florida.
Bad: The Azz-Kickers, Ass-Kickers or any other variation thereof. Every league has at least one yo-yo with a hairy chested macho man of a team name. Or so they think. They usually put about as much thought into their roster as they do their team name.
The Ugly: Obscene or abusive team names are all too common in fantasy football leagues. Some think it's clever to name their team some phrase one might see scrawled on the stall in a mens' room. Personally, I take extra delight in beating these morons like a drum with my team.
Now for a list of team names that, if not clever are at least not lame:
The Con-Vicks
NoSoup4U!
White Thrash
The Latex Salesmen
Bush-Whackers for either fans of Reggie Bush of New Orleans or those of us who can't wait for the divider to leave the White House. (It's 157 days after today!)
Cheney's Sharpshooters or Dead-Eye Dick.
Ain't Afraida Al Qaeda
The Madden Curse after the supposed "jinx" of the player on the cover of the latest edition of the video game
Chico's Bail Bonds (especially good for Cincinnati Bengal fans)
Yo, Adrian! for teams with Adrian Peterson on the roster.
Raven Lunatics for Baltimore Raven fans.
Wayne's World or Atomic Reggie for owners having the name Reggie or Wayne or Reggie Wayne on the roster
Burn a TO for those who are less than enamored of Terrell Owens
Love Boat Crew for either Minnesota fans or Green Bay fans making fun of the Vikes
Raising McCain in a play on words. Also, let's not forget Sen McCain represents the state of Arizona, the setting of the Coen brothers film, Raising Arizona. Also, McCain's temper is quite reknowned.
Between Barack & A Hard Place for either fans or detractors of the junior Senator from Illinois. This one also could describe the fate of the nation.
The Nuttcrackers for fans of the other 11 SEC schools besides Ole Miss
The Mala-Mules for owners of the large Alaskan sled dogs known for stubborness
The Rotten-Weilers
Borat's Bears
Berserk-istan, especially good if your name is Stan
Rock Ridge after the fictional town in Blazing Saddles.
That's around 25, which should be enough for you to chew on, I hope you got some ideas so that you don't have to resort to the dreaded insert-your-name here's team.
