Tips for a Natural Beauty Look with Make-Up

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
We women generally wear our make-up to cover up some "flaw" that we think we see on our faces. To some others these flaws of ours may seem to be beautiful but to us they just will not do. Covering up these flaws and evening up the skin tone is fairly simple to do, but sometimes you don't really want to "look" like you are trying so hard. It really is not that difficult to get a natural look with the right shades and placement of your make-up. Here are some tips to get that natural look any day.

Starting with a nice stick of concealer, aka cover-up, you will want to put a light dab on any blemishes (even those dark circles under your eyes). Do not blend it in yet though. Make sure to choose a shade that is about two shades lighter than your natural skin tone as this will help to give you a bright, fresh, "awake" look.

Next you will apply your foundation. This should be as closely matched to your natural skin tone as possible. If you can not find something that is an exact match it is better to go a tad bit lighter than darker, as darker will just make it look fake, rather than natural. Dab your finger in the foundation and blend it into one side of your face- you can also use a cosmetic sponge for this step. Then repeat this action on the other. Make sure to get your chin and to blend up to your hairline. This is also the point in which your concealer is being blending in.

Choose an eyeliner color that resembles your eye color, which will help to enhance the beauty of your eyes. I like to use brown because I have hazel eyes. Green would also be a good color for me. Try to choose paler colors rather than sharp ones, and when going for a natural look try not to overdo the black eyeliner. For bigger, more awake, looking eyes you can also apply eyeliner both above and below the eyes making sure to go all the way across each eye.

Now it is time to apply powder. Your powder shade should also match your natural skin tone, as close as possible. The powder's job is to smooth your look out and take away any shine that may be making your face look oily. Only powder lightly though.

For eyeshadow, lipstick and blush choose neutral shades that are natural and light. Doing this will help to make sure that you do not look like you are wearing a ton of make-up. Pick a light colored bronzer for a sun-kissed look or just a pale brown/tan color for your cheeks and apply only at the cheekbone (just under, actually) making sure to blend it well. Lips should be a neutral color or just a clear gloss. Use two shades of eyeshadow for eyes that "pop". I like to use a medium brown placed over my eyelined areas and then blended with a somewhat sparkly cream color. The brown would cover the upper lid up to the crease, then blended with the cream up to my eyebrow.

A natural look is really easy to achieve. Follow these steps for true beauty that is flawless and doesn't look made-up!
