When you're in the dating scene are you experiencing social anxiety? Are you unsure of what you can do to overcome feelings of anxiety when dating? To help understand what type of impact social anxiety typically has on someone's dating life and what you can do to overcome social anxiety when dating, I have interviewed Psychologist Dr. Kelly Romirowsky.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
"I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in evidence-based therapy for a variety of mental health issues , including anxiety, depression, learning disabilities , and relationship issues. Evidence-based therapy means that I pull from the current research what has been shown to work for the problem you're trying to solve. My clients put balance back into their lives by focusing on self-care, critical thinking skills , and easy measurement of their progress."

What type of impact can social anxiety have on someone's dating life?
"I have seen people whose social anxiety got so bad that it destroyed their social life. They stayed at home, only went out when absolutely necessary, didn't answer their phone, email, or text. Other people whose anxiety is less debilitating still suffer because they avoid socializing, going to parties, and striking up conversations with people. If you're trying to date, social anxiety can make it really difficult to feel comfortable being in social settings and to open up to potential mates. Your self-esteem is also affected, making it even more challenging to put your best self out in public."

What are some tips for overcoming social anxiety when dating?
"I recommend you start with the least frightening social situation, master that and then move on to the next in your hierarchy.

For many people, it's really scary to take each step so it's important to learn some new relaxation techniques to do before, during, and after the difficult event (calling your date, waiting for your date to show up, etc.) to make it more tolerable. In addition, challenge your irrational thoughts about dating and yourself so they don't interfere with your willingness to put yourself out there. Last but not least, hone your social skills if that's an area of concern."

What type of professional help is available for someone that is having a difficult overcoming social anxiety when dating?
"Social anxiety is one of those problems where we know what works. That's fabulous news for all those suffering who think they have to live with these fears and can't have a successful dating life. If you're having trouble overcoming it yourself, find a psychologist who can help you set up a plan, teach you strategies, and help you reach a new level of comfort in the dating arena. Those who practice evidence-based treatment and cognitive-behavioral therapy will be your best source of professional help to overcome your social anxiety related to dating."
