What exactly are canker sores any way? Well canker sores look like red little blisters with a white coating over them. These sores are often found on the inside of your cheeks, lips, gums and under the tongue. The exact cause of canker sores is still unknown but scientists believe that it is due to poor diet, stress and/or hormonal imbalances.

Women in their 20's predominately suffer from canker sores usually, however, other people can get them too. Although canker sores can be very pain they are not contagious and be spread from one person to another. Here are some suggestions that may help in experiencing pain relief for canker sores.

How To Treat Canker Sores

The natural healing time for canker sores are a few days however if you find that you are still experiencing some pain you can take painkillers, which contain acetaminophen and ibuprofen, these will provide fast pain relief for canker sore. There are over-the-counter pain killers available at your local pharmacy in the form of gum and lozenges that one can hold in the mouth over the affected area to provide an analgesic effect and, provide pain relief for canker sores.

Another remedy for pain relief for canker sores is combining Milk of Magnesia and Benadryl, this is mixed in equal amounts and then taken with a spoon, you can then swish it in the mouth over the sore for at least 30 seconds or more. You can repeat this treatment every 4 to 6 hours to provide the desired pain relief for canker sores.

Another Canker Sore Pain Relief Tip

You may want to make an appointment with your doctor if your canker sores persist for more then a week to ten days. Also if your canker sores prevent you from eating normally or if you get a fever during the time you are having canker sore you should consult your doctor, as you may have an infection and a treatment with antibiotics may be required.

To treat your canker sores your doctor may prescribe a choice of creams or antibiotics that will act quickly and efficiently on your canker sore. If taking antibiotics you must follow your doctor's instructions and complete the treatment even if you find that the canker sore has healed. The reason for this is that a complete cycle of antibiotics must be completed in order for the pills to have their effect or else your canker sore may come back.

How Do I Prevent A Canker Sore?

There really is no known cause for canker sores, nor is there any way to prevent them but, doctors recommend not using harsh objects in your mouth. Be sure to use a soft toothbrush, and to eat foods that don't cause irritations, such as spicy dishes that may cause the insides of your mouth and gums irritation.
