Tips for Painting Your Cupboards

Shannon Frye
Perhaps your cupboards have been painted in the past and you feel that you want to repaint them for whatever reason. Perhaps the paint is starting to peel and you want to make your cupboards look better. The first thing that you will need to do is remove the old paint from the cupboards. You cannot leave the cupboard alone and place paint right over the top of the cupboard. You will need to sand down the paint or use paint thinner to remove the existing paint from the cupboards.

I would suggest pulling the cupboards down and placing them on the ground so that its easier to paint them and remove the old paint. You can remove the screws and pull the cupboards off of the hinges. You will need to lay down some towels and expect that this is going to create a very large mess, especially if you accidentally spill the paint on the floor, which is why you need to lay down plastic before you start painting the cupboard doors.

If you paint over existing paint the paint will be very thick and uneven in some spots. If you know of a better idea to remove the paint without harming the cupboard than feel free to use that method. You will need to try and match up the paint or you can use a fresh color of paint but you will need to use several coats to make sure that the existing paint doesn't show through the paint if you decide that you should leave the old paint on the cupboards.

You will need to purchase either a roller or some types of paint brushes. The thing about paint brushes is that the needles will fall off and you will paint right over them on accident. The bad thing about rollers is that they will fling paint in all different directions. Which ever you choose will work out fine as long as you check for needles and cover the entire floor with plastic.

Make sure to paint evenly. Make sure that you mix up the paint well before you start painting. You will also want to make sure you apply the same coat to each cupboard. Don't forget and put one coat on some of the cupboards because when it dries it could be a shade lighter. Start with one cupboard and work your way down the line. The next day when the paint is dry you will want to go back over and start from the beginning to apply a second coat. You will probably want to purchase some type of primer to put on the cupboard before you start painting.
