Firstly; Having panic attacks is nothing to be ashamed of, they are extremely common.

One serious problem with panic attacks is that they are often mistaken for other aliments, such as asthma attacks or heart attacks.

If you suffer from anxiety you will know that learning how to control panic attacks is a critical step in the recovery procedure, half the battle in learning to cope with panic attacks is, understanding them.

Living with anxiety and panic attacks is not easy, and being prone to anxiety and panic attacks is kind of like walking around with a loaded gun; you just never know when it is going to go off on its own.

The fact that there is no obvious reason for these panic attacks is not a consolation to the sufferer.

The key to overcoming panic attacks is to relax!

One in three people can expect to have a panic attack at some stage. As much as 35% of the general population has panic attacks over the course of a year.
What are the symptoms of panic attacks?

The main symptom of the panic attack is a sudden, overwhelming sensation of fear and terror.

They often begin abruptly, peaks within 10 minutes and lasts about half an hour.
Symptoms may feel life threatening, and terrible fear arises, resulting in a further worsening of the situation.

Anxiety panic attacks are real, serious but easily treatable. It is thought that no one has ever come to any harm as a result of anxiety or a panic attack, although some people try to ignore the signs and symptoms, not realizing that they're experiencing a panic attack.

What causes panic attacks?

Alcohol, Caffeine and smoking all contribute to panic attacks and are best avoided.

Sometimes just the anticipation of being in a particular situation can cause severe anxiety. Even when you're not experiencing an anxiety attack, often you can become increasingly nervous and apprehensive.

Over time, panic attacks can begin to alter the way you behave, think and feel in your everyday life, even when you're not having an actual panic attack.

When you get to the bottom of a panic attack there is usually some tiny, unconscious fear or memory that triggered it off in un-subconscious mind.

Researchers now believe that the fearful symptoms of panic attacks are responsible for the progression of phobias and other stress - related illnesses. For many of these individuals they can become depressed as a result of living with panic disorder and its symptoms.

That's why it's important to know what the symptoms are, and to make sure you get the right help. You have to establish how the attack develops, how long it lasts, as well as what and how many typical symptoms are present.

Once you are familiar with the symptoms and causes of panic attacks, you can deal with the attacks, and keep them under control as much as possible; without seeking care in the emergency department.

Tips on how to achieve this;

Learn to take control of your breathing, this may be difficult at first but this will relax you, resulting in you returning to a calm state.

Also, by learning to do this you are ensuring you can treat yourself if one strikes when you're on your own!

Learn about them as much as you can- as the more you know the more you will be able to control them. Figure out what triggers them; get to the under-lying cause of the anxiety.

This will decrease the chances of them striking when put in the situation that causes them!

Exercise is a great way to ease anxiety believe it or not. Exercising is proven to release "happy hormones" (pheromones). This will have an effect throughout your body, because you will feel great!

My ultimate tip is DO NOT let anxiety and panic attacks control your life, you have got the power to control them and perhaps even banish anxiety for good!

Technically, I've been writing on and off since high school; but I didn't get serious until a few months ago. I'd like to be published someday so I am going to continue writing and see what the future holds.  View profile
