Tips on How to Pick Out a Digital Camera

Greg Smith
Digital cameras have become one of the most popular electronic devices to buy these days. But people often become disgusted when trying to find which digital camera is the best fit for their personal use. Sure they give you all the details about megapixels, performance and different models, but trying to match up the specs with your price range and the features you're looking for is a daunting task.

So to help you in your search for your perfect digital camera, here are some simple tips and definitions to guide you through the selection process.

- Pixels

One of the most significant benefits to look for on a digital camera is the megapixel count. A high megapixel count means the picture will be of a better quality. One megapixel is the equivalent to 1 million pixels. The image resolution of your camera is based on this property. That's why when you enlarge the pic from its natural state; the colors on it will become blurry.

- Zoom

It is fairly standard for digital and optical cameras to have what is called zoom. Optical zoom is similar to what you'll find in 35mm camera. When trying to zoom in or out, it will be the physical lens that moves inside the camera when you try to zoom your focus in or out.

With digital zoom, there are no moving parts. The camera uses it's programming to investigate what it is seeing. After it determines what its focus is, the camera's brain will digitally zoom in two to tens times closer, depending on the model.

To find a camera to your liking, evaluate the cameras and their zoom property side by side. Determine which one has a zoom feature that is more to your liking.

- LCD

Almost all digital cameras these days have a LCD lens that you look at to get an initial view of the picture you're going to take. This eliminates the need to squint through a little glass hole to get an idea of how your picture will look and also will give you a more realistic pre-picture with lighting and shadows involved.

There are a few high-end models that allow you to actually touch up our picture while you're looking at your LCD panel.

The average LCD screen is a 1.5 inch display. Although a 2 inch display is good, if you're looking for an optimal size look for 2.5 inches or greater.
