Choosing a pillow that supports your head, providing it with natural alignment to your spine is the most important thing to consider when choosing your new pillow. The general rule of thumb to achieve proper alignment while sleeping is to buy a pillow about four to six inches in height. This will ensure your neck maintains the proper angle while sleeping , reducing the occurrence of muscle pain from sleeping. Your pillow is there to alleviate pressure points by molding to your individual shape and sleeping position.
Back sleeper- If you are a back sleeper you need to create support for head, neck and shoulders. Your pillow should be lower than it would be in a side sleeping position. The pillow you choose should be of a medium firmness. Back sleepers may also find additional comfort in placing a pillow under their knees for added support and alignment.
Side sleeper- The goal of a side sleeper is to create support for the head and neck. If you sleep on your side you want to make sure your weight is distributed evenly along your whole body. The average side sleeper would benefit from a pillow of medium to medium firm consistency.
Stomach sleeper- Making sure your head and neck are not cranked on an unnatural angle is very important for side sleepers. Side sleepers can either choose to sleep with no pillow at all or choose a pillow that is almost flat. They should always choose a pillow that is soft rather than firm.
Determining the type of fill for your pillow is really a personal choice. Many are good, but everyone has different preferences for different reasons.
Synthetic Fill- Polyester is desirable, because it is inexpensive and machine washable. Polyester fill pillows are often pretreated with anti-bacterial, which can help increase longevity and reduce illness.
Foam/Latex fill- Foam lasts long and is great for people seeking a firm pillow. Latex may break down quicker than foam, but many people find it more comfortable.
Feather or Down fill- These pillows are great for people seeking a softer pillow. Keep in mind when purchasing, the higher percentage of down content the softer the pillow.
Wool fill- Wool is a great organic natural alternative to synthetic fill. It does go flat quicker though. Wool is a natural fibre though, so it is more breathable than some of the other materials.
