Tips for Planning a Thanksgiving Wedding

Terri Deno
Weddings are always a special occasion. To make a wedding extra special, many people take the opportunity to have a wedding around or on a holiday. Because family and friends are more likely to be around during a holiday such as Thanksgiving, there is no better time to hold your wedding.

Making Your Day Extra Special

When you plan a Thanksgiving wedding, you will first want to make sure that all of the most important people you plan to invite will be available. While family may already be coming to celebrate the holiday with you, your friends may have their own family celebrations that will keep them from attending your wedding. If this becomes a major problem, then a Thanksgiving wedding is probably not recommended. But if you plan carefully, you can allow many of your friends to enjoy time with their family and still have the chance to celebrate your wedding.

Another way to help your wedding extra special because of Thanksgiving is to incorporate Thanksgiving themes within your wedding. Instead of the flower girl spreading flower petals down the isle, she can spread fall colored leaves that coordinate with your wedding flowers. As for the dinner, you can easily make the reception party double as Thanksgiving dinner just by serving all the traditional favorites, including turkey and pumpkin pie.

Remember to keep the Thanksgiving theme in balance with the special day in order to create a unique atmosphere that is inviting and fun for your and the wedding guests. Try not to go overboard with Thanksgiving decorations, but don't completely remove the holiday from the occasion. Strike a comfortable balance that will please you as well as your guests.

Choose Thankfulness

Because a wedding is all about being thankful for the friends, family, and the new union that is taking place, make sure that you take the time to give thanks to your guests for coming, and try to incorporate everyone in the Thanksgiving celebration. Many weddings will have a video camera going around to all the tables asking people for advice and well wishes for the couple. Instead of the more traditional messages, have the guests each say why they are thankful for the couple or for the union that has just taken place. This will let everyone participate in some aspect of the Thanksgiving festivities.

The most important aspect of planning any wedding is to remember that this is a day to celebrate the love of you and your partner, whether it falls on a holiday or not.
