Tips for a Powerful Resume

Today's job market can be very competitive. Employers have to rely on a very well organized and written resume in order to cut down the numbers of possible employees they have to interview. Employers now have the option of looking through resumes online at job search websites. This can help them find people who fit the exact job descriptions they are looking for. Because this is such a popular way for employers to find employees, you are encouraged to place your resume on these types of websites. There is a downside to these websites however, and that is that you have to make your resume soar above all of the others to be noticed.

One way to be noticed is to write a professional profile or a summary to start off your resume. This will allow you to sell yourself to the employer by letting them know something that makes you different from all of your competition. It is also a great way to allow the employer to see how good your communication skills are. You need to remember when writing this summary that it is a job application, and not a personal letter. Giving the employer information about your marital status, religious beliefs, ethnicity or sexual orientation would be considered very inappropriate. This section is to describe your qualifications for the job and what makes you better at the job then everyone else. You should only include previous jobs if they clearly illustrate how you will excel in this job. Make sure and spice up your resume, staying away from general statements they hear all the time.

Make this summary one short paragraph or list of bullets. It should only contain a few sentences, so that you do not repeat or ramble, and so that your reader does not loose interest in the summary. Include a headline about your profession or your title. Add things like bold font or larger font in order to draw attention to your headline. Make sure you word your headline well, as it is likely to be the first thing your employer reads, and will make a lasting impression. You should include the following items in your summary:

- Job related skills and experiences.

- What you will contribute to the company if given the position that no one else will.

- What you would like to see yourself doing in the company, your goals.

Composing the summary in third person, even though it is written by you, is ideal. You want to write about yourself like you believe one of your colleagues would. Make sure and enforce your title, giving it meaning in your summary. If you are applying for more then one position in the same company, it is suggested that you write a summary for each of those career objectives. You can also add a small amount of vital skills that you have, which would make you look like a competitive applicant.

A lot of hard work and organization have to go into a good resume. You should always make sure and stick to the professional standards companies have come to expect while trying to make your resume stick out. Writing a professional summary is a great way to accomplish that difficult task. Make sure and touch on all the things that you can do for the company that no one else would be able to do. Give the employer a reason to give your resume a second note by creating a headline that will stand out and attract their attention. If you can manage to incorporate all of these suggestions into your new resume, you are sure to soar above the competition.
