Height of lift
Once you have decided that you want your truck to be lifted you will have to decide on the quantum of the lift. Lifts are generally restricted to between 2 inches and 8 inches, though higher heights are possible. You have to consider legal issues, as the lift would change the heights of the lights on your vehicle, and some states have strict rules regarding this. You can always lower the light to suit the requirements. Lifting is best done by professionals who would ensure that all aspects are taken care of and the vehicle would run as before. You can of course do the job yourself, by jacking up the truck. You can complete the installation with just keeping your vehicle off the road for a day or two.
Care while lifting
A lot of care has to be taken to see that the suspension system of the truck does not suffer any damage or misalignment in the lifting process as this could seriously affect its running in future.
Proper kits and parts
Choose the proper lift kit for your truck. The body lift type would use the original suspension and only raise the height of the body. Suspension lift kits would require certain parts of the suspension to be changed and the shock absorbers and leaf springs to be replaced. Do not stint on the cost of the kit, as getting it from the right manufacturer who has had a lot of experience in the field, would mean that your kit would not cause you trouble in future. A kit that is not really suited to your truck could cause serious damage to all parts of your vehicle and land you with a very hefty bill to get things back to normal.
If you wish to ride on larger tires you would almost certainly need to change the leaf springs as well. These are not part of any lifting kit and would have to be purchased separately. You would have to decide on the size and number of springs that can be used to bolt onto the already predetermined positions that are there on your truck. Again selection of the leaf springs is very important and you need to buy springs that are of high quality steel besides having the necessary warranties, which may be life time ones for the better brands. You can also go in for better shock absorbers that will suit your lift and ensure a smooth bump free ride. They should be able to dampen the shocks correctly and ensure a smooth ride.
So lift your truck and look down on traffic around you.
