1. Get the proper amount of rest before you start your trip.
2. Be certain that your vehicle is in good running condition to make the round trip. Have the oil, filter and wiper blades changed, check coolant levels, tire pressure and water pump. Consider a tune-up if it's been a while since your last one. Have your vehicle washed and vacuumed.
3. Consider renting a vehicle. Why put all those miles on your car? A rental may be cheaper than you realize. Compare putting mileage and wear and tear on your own car, maintenance and fuel costs, and comfort against the price of a rental for the weekend or by the week. Most major car rental companies offer unlimited miles, and you get to select the size vehicle that you'll need to maximize comfort and accommodate the number of passengers you plan to carry. If you're traveling around a holiday, you may need to make reservations several months in advance.
4. Good radio stations are often hard to find on the road, so why not make CDs of your favorite music to listen to. Before leaving try to find radio stations that will provide local news, weather, and traffic for areas that you intend to pass through. Also check for Radio Disney call numbers for the kiddies.
5. You can never go wrong with snacks. Plan to take things like beef jerky, rice cakes, granola bars, bottled water and juices or a Subway sandwich.
6. Don't forget the lip balm, sun screen and chewing gum.
7. Know where you're going. Look at a map to familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding the highway(s) leading to your destination. You never know when you'll have to detour.
8. Pay attention to the speed limits. You don't need to waste money on a ticket.
9. Lastly, enjoy!
