Tips for Preparing for Senior Independent Living

Seniors Living Independently

Max Stout
For the senior the actual concept of living independently is easy to grasp as it is a natural continuation of the same life lived while being married and raising a family. However, moving into the twilight years thinking that life will always be the same as it was then can be a mistake. There are certain considerations that should be considered and acted upon when a senior begins to live independently even if a particular service or device may not have made its need known yet.

Independent Living - Pocket Money

It is important for seniors to not keep to much ready cash handy at their home. Sit down and set limits for the amount of pocket money that would be ideal to have around the house for any outings that may come up on a weekend or after the bank is closed. Only keep this amount at your home and never anymore.

Independent Living - Bathroom Considerations

Even if you or your parents can still negotiate getting in and out of the bathtub or shower without difficulty, it is important to go ahead and install assisted living devices such as a removable bath chair as well as support rails. These will be there when needed.

Independent Living - Kitchen Considerations

There are multiple things to consider in the kitchen. First off is cabinet organization. Older people are not going to be able to stretch as high to reach objects or to climb up on the counter to take down Aunt Ida's cookie platter. Bring everything necessary down to an easily and comfortably accessible height. Leave the top shelves for items that can be stored indefinitely. Make sure that all handles and knobs are easily turned and that all labeled surfaces can be clearly read.

Independent Living - Financial Considerations

Before living independently be sure to speak with a lawyer about your future. Let him or her advise you as to the best method of ensuring that you will be allowed to live in your home until you are no longer able to do so. It is very easy for seniors to be taken advantage of by friends and family members, let a lawyer ensure this doesn't happen to you.

Independent Living - Emergency Considerations

A final way to live safely independently is to have an emergency system in place. Whether it be a beeper, a constantly carried portable or cellular phone, or another type of health monitor, keep a way to contact help within reach at all times.

All five of these tips can help a senior live well while living independently.
