Tips for Preparing Your Yard and Garden for Next Spring

Now is the best time of year to start thinking of preparing your yard and garden for next spring. Planning now makes the first signs of spring extremely pleasant.

During the hotter parts of the summer the yard and garden get a little neglected. Weeds are over growing in the garden because it has just been to hot to bother or we are just to busy enjoying the summer activities to notice. The lawns are looking a little shaggy and burnt from the extreme heat and lack of rain. All those little things that you meant to do have been set aside for whatever reason.

Now that the summer months are waning and the temperatures are dropping to a more acceptable level, we can take notice and get out and start preparing the yard and gardens for next spring.

Getting the weeds out of the garden and pruning the plants that are done blooming gets you a huge jumpstart. Start trimming all the death foliage from shrubs and perennials. Trim the outer edges of you gardens from the over growth of the lawn or other plants. Now is also a good time to fertilize your gardens. The cooler temperatures and the added rainfall this time of year, helps get the plants the extra nutrients that they require to be healthy enough to survive the harsh winter.

Now onto the lawns, this is the best time to get the lawn care in shape. With the cooler temperatures, raking the build up of dead grass and aerating the soil to promote a stronger root system prepares the soil for our next step. Post summer is always rainier than during the summer so fertilizing and weed killing now makes sense. This will give the fertilizer all winter to work on your lawn. Also reseeding is popular this time of year. Just make sure your grass seed has time to germinate and take hold before the first heavy frost. There should not be a lot of extra watering required this time of year and when the snow comes, if you live in snowy regions, it acts as a barrier or insulator for your young grass. Now come spring the lawn should look in pretty decent shape.

While you are preparing your yard and garden for next spring, give the cement structures a once over for grass and weeds growing in the cracks. For some reason grass always seems to grow where you least want it. Driveways and side walks are perfect victims of this. This step gives the over all appearance a more completed look.

Now that the yard and garden is prepared for next spring, when that first bloom starts to pop through, it can be beautiful.
