Tips for Preserving Your Discount Movie Posters

JB Robbins
Collecting discount movie posters is a common practice among kids, teens, college students and adults. This hobby is not only fun, but it is a great way to preserve fond memories of your favorite movies. However, simply pinning your movie posters on your wall is going to limit how long your poster will last. Fortunately, it is very easy to preserve your movie posters so that they last decades instead of months.

Preserving Movie Posters Option No. 1: Framing

If you plan on keeping your movie posters displayed on your wall, then you need to frame them. Framing the poster will keep them flat and it will protect the poster from pin holes and tears. For more valuable posters you will want to insert a pane of glass or plexiglass into the frame to protect the poster from dust and moisture damage. Finally, for those extra special movie posters, you can use polarized glass to prevent light damage, fading and discoloration.

Preserving Movie Posters Option No. 2: Matte Selection

If you plan on matting your discount movie posters then you need to be careful about what mattes you select. Some of the paper mattes have acidic surfaces that will cause your movie poster to discolor over time. To avoid this you will want to find archival quality mattes. They cost a little more, but they are still very affordable.

Preserving Movie Posters Option No. 3: Rolling Your Posters for Storage

If you plan on storing your movie posters in an attic, garage or basement, you need to make sure the poster is rolled properly and stored in a manner that keeps bugs, moisture and light from damaging it. Start by laying down a large piece of butcher's paper on a flat surface. Then place your movie poster on top of the paper. Roll the poster up in the butcher's paper so that it will fit into a cardboard tube. Then cap the ends of the tube with plastic caps. This will keep bugs out. If you will be storing the tube where it may come in contact with rodents, use a plastic tube as opposed to a cardboard tube.

Preserving Movie Posters Option No. 4: Lamination

Lamination is another option that you have for preserving your movie posters. However, this is an option that can lower the value of a collectible movie poster so you will only want to laminate the posters that have personal value, instead of actual monetary value. To laminate a poster you will need a laminating machine that is large enough to handle the job and a large roll of laminating film.
