It may surprise you just how often carjacking occurs and where it occurs. It doesn't always happen at night or in secluded areas. It can happen in broad daylight. It can happen in a busy parking lot. That makes it even more imperative to always be aware of your surroundings.
Most carjackings happen in big cities, but that does not exclude small towns. Carjackings also happen more in busy parking lots, but once again that does not exclude small parking lots. Some popular places that carjacking occurs are atm's, bank parking lots, hotels, fast food drive thru, and convenience stores.
Most anyone can be a target for a carjacker. Most of the time it is a lone driver, but there are cases where more than one person has been involved. You may also be interested to know that most carjackings happen within 5 miles of the victims home. It may also come as a surprise to you to know that men more often than women are victims of carjacking.
So what are the reasons behind a carjacking? Why do the perpetrators do it? There are many reasons. Some just want a quick joyride. Some stolen vehicles are broken down into smaller parts that can be resold. Other times vehicles may be resold in other countries. Some criminals carjack to commit other crimes.
So how can you be safe and protect yourself from a potential carjacking situation? There are several ways to ensure your safety and the safety of your vehicle. Always have your key in hand when approaching your vehicle. If you have to dig through your purse or bag to find your car keys that will distract you from your surroundings and you may miss potential situations you should be aware of. You need to always check around inside your car before you get in. Drive with your windows up and doors locked.
One good piece of advice is to know where you are going and how to get there. If you get lost you could end up out of gas or in a bad part of town. Always be prepared. Avoid driving through high crime areas or areas that are unknown to you. If at all possible also avoid driving late at night or in the early morning hours when there is less traffic.
When approaching your destination avoid parking by a suspicious van or van without windows. It is wise to park in a well lit part of a parking lot. Never sit in your car while it's parked. If you are waiting on someone find a place to wait inside.
Never leave your car running. Even if it's just for a minute to run into the post office or store. That is a welcome opportunity for a carjacker. That also goes for leaving the keys in your parked car.
Remove all valuables from your car. Keep a copy of your insurance and license plate# with you. It's also a good idea to have you VIN# (vehicle identification number) with you also.
One final thought. Your life is worth more than your car. Never try to be a hero. If you are ever accosted by a carjacker it is best to cooperate and let them have your car.
