Tips to Prevent Makeup Application Mistakes that Make You Look like a Clown
When Applying Makeup, Less is Always Better
Years ago I had an employee who was quite attractive with no makeup on at all. However, she had one problem: She wore makeup to work as if she was going to work as a clown. Her makeup was always applied horrifically with far too much and too many colors. She never considered the fact that when people looked at her, they were not admiring her beauty, but wondering why she overplayed her makeup. She had gorgeous naturally long eyelashes, but she also wore hideous false eyelashes. It was as if she really did not realize that she wore far too much makeup. Especially way too much for an office.
The one thing women tend to do when applying makeup is forget the "golden' rule of makeup application. The 'golden' rule is that when you have finished applying your makeup for everyday wear, your face should look as if it has no makeup on other than makeup lip-gloss or a minimal amount of eye shadow. There should be no lines to indicate where the makeup ends and your true complexion begins. There should be no appearance of makeup or powder caking on the face. Nor should there ever be a hint of anything false on your face.
To have flawless makeup applications every time, women should follow a few simple rules. Those rules are common to entire body care in addition to common sense rules when using makeup. Simply put, if you do not know how to use makeup properly, take a class or do not wear it. The damage caused to the complexion by applying makeup incorrectly is far greater than just wearing a clean face at all times.
Begin with a Clean Face and Neck
Before applying even a minimal amount of makeup, make sure your face and neck are clean. Begin by washing your face with a cleanser that is perfect for your skin type. Even though advertisers want you to believe there are some bar soaps perfect for facial cleansing, bar soap is not recommended to clean the face and neck. All bar soaps leave a residue that remains on the face and neck. Use cleansers designed for the face and neck. Preferably use warm water to rinse. Hot water is okay every once in a while. However, as a norm, wash and rinse with warm water. Make sure after washing to rinse thoroughly making sure your face is squeaky clean.
Use A Toner and Moisturizer
After cleaning, use a toner or astringent to remove any remaining makeup that cleaning has not removed. A toner or astringent closes the pores and restores the pH balance to the skin. It also prepares the skin for your daily moisturizer. Now the next step is to apply a moisturizer that has been selected for your skin type. Remember if you have oily skin, choose a moisturizer that has no oils or grease. Only those with dry skin should use an oil based moisturizer or any facial care items with oil.
Select Makeup Brands That Are Not Heavy
When selecting your makeup for everyday wear/use, select makeup that is very light. Remember you will be wearing makeup most of the day in most cases at least nine hours of the day. Your pores must be allowed to breathe. Unless you have scars or damage that requires heavy covering, make sure your makeup is very light. Anything other than light makeup is going to give you a false appearance or will be obvious that it is makeup and not your natural complexion. Select a foundation that is light, apply powder with a little blush, lipstick or gloss and eyeliner or eye shadow and off you go.
Remember, if your skin is flawless, do not use makeup. The longer you go through life without applying makeup, the healthier and more flawless your skin will be. However, not all of us are blessed with gorgeous flawless skin. So, when there is a need to apply makeup, add only what is necessary to even out the skin tone and make you feel good.
Remember however, if you have acne or any skin problems, check with your dermatologist before applying anything to your skin. Makeup, moisturizers, cleansers can cause more damage when one already suffers with skin problems or conditions.

So glad that my wife is a prudent woman. Great writing, Malina.
Yes!!
Thank goodness I never wear too much make up! Thanks for this article. ; )
Great tips, Malina. I believe if the barn needs a little painting, paint it! But don't forget...not while you're driving...well, maybe at red lights.
I gave up years ago.
It has been a long time since I wore makeup
Great tips....I hate it when foundation is too dark for the skin tone.
Great work!
Although I'm with Adam - I don't think he may realize that women who are wearing 'no makeup' oftentimes are wearing a tiny bit of 'undetectible' makeup ;)
No make up is often times far better. I say, do away with all makeup! That would be true liberation for women.
