Tips on Preventing Car Rust

Mich Butler
Is your car starting to rust, or perhaps you want to ward off rust? Well, here are some tips to help you out.

The first thing is try to remove the rust that is already there. The best way to do it is sand blast it, then Bondo any holes or blemishes that appear, and paint it.

Another approach is scraping the rust off with a wire brush, as best you can and then put rust converter on what is left. They probably sell rust converter at your local fleet farm. Then paint over it

The last way, and I would not suggest it because rust will most likely reappear. Is to scrape off the rust with the wire brush, and then put Rustoleum super primer on it, the kind that is designed for going over rust. Then paint it.

If your car does not have rust, or you have already done the steps above, it is time to take steps to guard from rusts appearance. The first thing you need to do is look at the bottom of the car. There is probably rust on the under carriage, that is the part that is the underbelly of the car. If that is the case you will want to do something about it. You do not want to do the same as before, because the undercarriage gets rusty quick. So just scrape the bottom with a wire brush then paint it with a cheap oil based paint. Remember oil based not latex not acrylic, and certainly not water. Water based paint is the worst. You do not need to have expensive kind. Do not worry about what color it is either, because no one will ever see the bottom of your car, unless you flipped over or are having it worked on.

Put plenty on the rusty spots. This is not only to prevent the rest spots from becoming large rust holes, but also to keep the rust to prevent the rust from spreading to the outer bottom of the car were rust is visible.

This is not permanent, remember that. It will wear off in a couple of years. So you may want to check to see if the rust has come back about every year. If it returns you should just repeat the process. Also you can out old oil on the rust spots to ward more corrosion.

It is also very important to note that you should never leave bare metal out in the elements. So paint it as soon as you can.
