Tips to Preventing Lost Airline Luggage

Lost Airline Luggage Can Be Prevented by Using These Tips

Mike Burnside
Chances are that if you fly with any frequency, you will be a victim of lost airline luggage. Somehow, the luggage you checked in at the airport will just never make it to the same destination you arrived at. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has rules that state that if your checked airline luggage is lost, damaged, or delayed you could be eligible for up to $3,300 in compensation if you flew domestically. It is about $1,700 for most international flights. Though having that compensation is nice, it is far better to have your airline luggage arrive with you in the first place. We have come up with some tips to help you avoid lost airline luggage and a few tips to prepare you when it happens.

Preparation is Important to Avoid Lost Airline Luggage
There are steps you can prepare to do before you travel to avoid losing your airline luggage.

- When possible, book a direct or nonstop flight. This will reduce the chance of lost airline luggage.

- Look online and check out what airlines have the least lost luggage record.

- Make sure that your carry-on bag has enough essential clothing and toiletries to get you by for a few days if your luggage does get lost.

- Make sure that your luggage is tagged well. Remove any old luggage tags to avoid confusion if your bags get lost.

How to Avoid Lost Airline Luggage at the Airport
- Do not to check in late at the airport. Your luggage might not have enough time to catch the same flight as your taking.

- Destination tags are very important. Make sure one is on your luggage when you check in.

- Your luggage claim ticket should not be forgotten or left on the plane. You will need it to verify a claim if your airline luggage does get lost.

How to Avoid Lost Airline Luggage When You Arrive
- Avoid making any detours when getting off the plan. Go directly to the luggage carousel to meet your bags.

- If you discover that your luggage is truly lost, find the lost luggage counter, and file a claim immediately. Keep a copy of the claim for future disputes.

- While at the lost luggage counter ask for the airline's carriage contract. This contract will spell out the carrier's responsibilities and your lost luggage rights.

That is a classic piece of luggage in that pic. You gotta love the stickers that emphasize the total around the world and then some theme. You have listed some great tips. I have never lost luggage, but I imagine it could happen pretty easily.
