Tips for Preventing Sinusitis This Holiday Season

Lori Piper
Not only are the holidays here, but sinusitis is here as well. Winter can bring about the worst cases of sinusitis. However, there is not a need to fret with worry about whether or not you will come down with this right before the holidays or even now, during the preparations for said holidays.

There are tips to help keep some sinus problems at bay so that the holidays can indeed be a joyful time.

Tips to beat sinusitis- do not be an ignoramus

Do not ignore your allergies. If you have them, deal with them. By addressing seasonal allergies whether it be via prescribed medication, natural remedies or over the counter medicines, do something. If you are aware that you have allergies, then you know that at times they make a play to be front and center in your life. Nip their symptoms in the bud (I do love Barney Fife) before they can lead to infections, such as sinusitis.

Tips to beat sinusitis- I can breathe clearly now- the air is clear

Invest in a hepa air filter. These filters can remove mold from homes. According to Mayo Clinic researchers, mold can be linked to 96 % of sinusitis cases in one of their studies.

Tips to beat sinusitis- blow me away...

How do you blow your nose? Do you blow one nostril at a time? Blowing through both nostrils is the recommended preventative technique. This is presuming that both nostrils are clear and not already stuffed up.

Tips to beat sinusitis- walking's good(my mother's favorite personal quote)

Exercise can be a huge preventive measure in reducing sinusitis flare ups. Why? Exercise causes out nasal passages to expand thereby causes a natural cleansing effect.

Tips to beat sinusitis- tea time

Drinking hot tea can open up nasal passages, loosing mucus and drain sinuses. Chose one you like as your personal favorite and then be daring and opt for a new tea you have not tried yet. Ask for recommendations from your friends. My friend recommended ginger tea: yes, I tried it but I shall not be making a repeat purchase of said tea.

Tips to beat sinusitis- hum....

Humming a tune increases the amount of air passing through our sinuses; thereby the risk of congestion is reduced. Hum Christmas carols.

Tips to beat sinusitis- the heat is on

Should you feel you sinuses begin to take a "going wacko" turn, apply a hot compress ( a washcloth or even paper towels will suffice) to your forehead three times daily for five minutes each time. This will aid in loosening congestion and eases frontal lobe pain from the pressure your sinuses are expending.

With these tips, and being in talks with your personal doctor, I hope you have a sinusitis free holiday!
