Tips for Prom Night

Mary E. Coe
Prom night will probably be one of the most memorable and special night of your life. So, make it a fun night. This is your big night; a night you will probably never forget. It is an extra special night for the seniors; because this will be their last year of High School and the Prom is one of the most unforgettable events of the senior year. Make it a fun night to remember.

Many students have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, they will most likely go to the prom as a couple. Other students may just go to the Prom with a good friend. However, all students won't have a date for the Prom. Keep in mind that this dance is not for couples only. This is your Prom night. Students may find it can be a lot of fun to go in groups. You can have a lot of fun with a group of friends.

For those of you who go as a couple; boys/girls; respect your dates. Don't leave your date alone while you run off to have fun with your buddies or another girl or boy. Make your date a part of everything you do this evening. Make your date feel special, do not abandon the person you came with. It's okay to go with your buddies for a short period of time. But, be polite. Tell your date that you will be back shortly, and do just that. Do not leave your date alone for a long period of time. Be happy and have fun. But, make sure that your date is, also, happy and having fun. Remember this is your date; the person you wanted to be with on this special night.

If your Prom date turns out to be one of those thoughtless person and abandon you at the dance. You may feel hurt and disappointed. But, try very hard not to let it ruin the entire night. If you see some of your friends at the Prom, with a group or without a date; you may want to join them. Usually, if friends see that you have been left alone, they will rescue you. Even thought you are feeling down, try hard to suck it up and have fun with your friends.

Prom night is a very expensive event. Prom tickets are expensive; however, it usually includes dinner. Most students split the cost of the tickets. It is Okay for a couple to split the cost of the tickets. It may be too expensive for one person to buy two tickets. It is cheaper to buy your tickets early from the school's student activity store. It is also, okay to split the cost of the prom photos. These photos are also expensive. Usually, you can take group photos as well as singles or couples photos. Some of the most fun and memorable pictures are the ones you take during the evening. Take your small camera and camcorder and take lots of pictures and videos.

If you plan to eat out before or after the prom; it is a very good idea to make reservations in advance; especially if you are going in a group and eating before the prom. When making reservations to eat before going to the dance; let the restaurant know that you will be going to the Prom after eating. Most restaurants will work with you and serve you at a timely fashion so you can get to the Prom on time. Everyone should arrive at the restaurant at least ten minutes early in order for everything to go smoothly.

You may want to meet at one person's house or the school parking lot. Parents and friends will have a chance to take pictures and become familiar with your group and their parents. If you're going in a large group and are not using a limousine service, cars can leave together and meet at the dance. If you're using a limousine service; the limo can pick everyone up at this one location. After the prom; everyone can be picked up at this same location; this will make it easier for the parents and the limo driver.

If your group is using a limo service, the cost can be very expensive. Students should split the cost as evenly as possible. It is imperative that you check out the limousine service to make sure that they are licensed by the state. Research the references of the limo service thoroughly. You want this to be a safe and fun night. Your safety is very important.

Girls, you are very young. It would be nice to go for the simple look. Focus on the overall look. You probably don't want to be too fancy; just a simple and beautiful look. You want to look your best; but you may want to keep it simple and beautiful. Make sure your fingernails looks nice. Have the toe nails looking nice, also, if you are wearing shoes that are cut out at the toes.

Hair styles are much more casual today than it used to be. Don't over do it with the jewelry, keep it simlpe. Keep the make up looking natural. Go for the natural look. Remember to focus on the overall look.

For your dress, pastels are beautiful; however, you can't go wrong with black. Black is formal and slenderizing and it looks fabulous. Choose the dress that looks best for you. The length is up to you, either long or knee length is okay. Shop around.

Boys, you may want to wear a tuxedo or a dark suit. Wear any color that looks best on you. Tuxedos can be rented. Tuxedo rentals can also include the shoes, the tie, the shirt and other extras. Tuxedo rentals can start as low as $49.00. The price will vary depending on what you want. Try to find something that matches your date's dress, especially your tie should match her dress.

It is customary for the boys to buy their dates a corsage. It can be a pin - on type or one that's worn around the wrist. The boy may want to find out the color of his date's dress before he purchase the corsage. It is, also, customary for the girls to buy a boutonniere for their dates. It is usually a rose or carnation with baby breath and usually worn on the right lapel (collar).

In order to make things run smoothly and to best manage your money; plan ahead, at least six weeks or more. Some people plan ahead as far as four months. Plan how much the evening will cost and how much you want to spend. Plan for unexpected occurrences.

Plan a fun after Prom activity with your group. Do something really fun and constructive with the group. Go out to eat; or get permission from one parent to meet at a student's house for more dancing and fun. Chaperones should be present; not necessarily in the same room watching your every move, but, they should be nearby, in the house. Whatever after Prom activity you plan; do it with your group of friends. It's safer and a lot of fun.

No drinking alcoholic beverages, please. No experimenting with drugs. Remember this is a fun night. You want to have the time of your life. Alcohol and drugs will only ruin things. It is bad news for your young body and brain and it is illegal. Don't do anything to spoil this night of great fun. Don't do anything to make your parents angry at you, or it can spoil all that fun and the very special night you had.

Please, keep your parents/guardians informed. Let them know your plans. It's not that they don't trust you; but, when you're out there late at night, parents do what parents do best, when their child is an hour or two late and they haven't heard from that child "THEY WORRY ABOUT YOU AND YOUR SAFETY. So, do your parents/guardians a favor; let them know your plans. Please, call if you are going to be late. Parents worry because they love you and they need to know that you are safe. So, keep parents/guardians happy and worry free. Keep them informed.

Prepare for emergencies. We hope everything will go smoothly and it usually does. However, don't leave home without extra money. Remember the planning in advance part; put emergency money aside for this night. Most students have a cell phone; don't leave home without it. Remember a cell phone is no good to you if it is not charged. Make sure your cell phone is charged. If you don't have a cell phone or accidentally forget yours, other students in your group will have one. However, try not to forget your cell phone.

Stay with your group; it is safer and much more fun to stay with the group.

Be responsible, don't leave valuables lying around to get lost or stolen. Take care of your money, cameras, camcorders, cell phone or any other valuables. Look out for each others. Look around and make sure your friends don't leave valuables lying around.

Be safe, have fun, and make this the time of your life.

I got to go to three proms! My boyfriend (and later first husband) was a year older than me. So there was his Junior year, his Senior and my Junior year, and then my Senior year! So I have lots of memories..if I could just remember them...LOL! Great topic and lovely girls!

I miswrote. Loved the dresses. Both girls are charming and gorgeous. (I am partial to the blue dress, but that is just my taste.) Great job

Good information and such a beautiful young lady. I loved the dress. Classy and elegant but not too old for her.

There is a lot to consider when you go to the prom. Customs vary a lot from country to country too. For example, in the UK, we didn't worry about corsages and limos. But a lot of what you mentioned is common practice in both countries.

Even though they aren't the photos you wanted, they're very nice photos and exceptionally pretty girls. This is excellent advice. I still remember my prom, and it was a very special occasion that I'll remember for a lifetime. Everyone going to prom should read this.
