Tips for Protecting Your Feet During Aerobic Exercise

R. M. Dubuc
Aerobic exercise is one of the best ways to burn calories and get fit. The upbeat routines of some types of aerobic exercises and activities can give your feet a real workout too, however, if you are not properly prepared. Most people do not consider the impact aerobic exercise can have on their feet. Injuries such as sprains, strains, and achy joints are just a few of the common aerobic exercise risks when your feet are not prepared for the increased stress. Other feet issues related to aerobic exercise may be less serious, but even callouses and blisters can be painful. There are a number of ways to prepare your feet properly for aerobic exercise. Many feet problems related to aerobic exercise can be prevented with the right precautions and planning. Before you start a regular aerobic exercise routine, consider a few of the following tips to prepare your feet.

Start with the Right Footwear

The wrong footwear or sneakers can cause a variety of feet problems during aerobic exercise. One way to protect your feet during aerobic exercise is to purchase a pair of sneakers designed for the high intensity of aerobic exercise. If you plan to workout regularly with aerobic exercises, investing in a good pair of sneakers for aerobic activity will benefit you in the long run. Many of the better quality, name brand sneakers offer specific designs for aerobic exercise.

Be Sure the Shoe Fits

Aerobic exercise footwear should fit well. Since many athletic shoes vary by width and size, the fit for some sneakers will also be different for individual wearers. New Balance is one of the companies which offers athletic shoes in narrow widths, and this can make all the difference for someone who has a narrow foot. Those with wide feet should look for sneaker brands which offer the sneaker in wider widths. The fit of the shoe is especially important for aerobic exercises, and undue strain can be prevented by a properly fitted sneaker.

Attend to any Callouses or Blisters Immediately

Callouses can happen to anyone during aerobic exercise, but some people are more prone to getting them. Before starting any aerobic exercise, attend to any developing callouses by treating them with over-the-counter methods or by visiting a podiatrist. Aerobic activity can irritate existing callouses because of all the impact on the feet, often on the ball of the feet. Blisters can develop when a sneaker rubs on the foot during aerobic exercise. Sometimes the cause is a poorly fitted sneaker. Body Glide is one product that some people apply to areas prone to blisters, before aerobic exercise.

Consider Foot Cushions for a Better Fit

If you notice that your feet hurt or feel strained after aerobic exercise, your sneakers may not be providing enough cushioning to your feet during aerobic exercise. Dr. Scholls and other brands on the market make a variety of foot cushioning options for under $10. Extra cushioning will reduce the impact of aerobic exercise on the feet. New products such as gel insoles offer cushioning and a cooling gel to keep the feet from overheating during aerobic exercise.

Pamper Your Feet

Another way to protect your feet during aerobic workouts is to provide some TLC before and after you work out. Adding a dusting of foot powder to your sneakers before working out, and attending to any pre-existing foot conditions will go a long way toward keeping your feet comfortable during an aerobic workout. Soaking your feet with warm or hot water after aerobic activity can help to relax tired feet.
